(197) PEASMARSH, St. Peter & St. Paul

Norman core, chancel is Early English, Decorated South aisle - Nairn & Pevsner (578) and Livett (SAC 47 35-46); largely unrestored and full of atmosphere, now isolated from the village but within sight of the manor (Peasmarsh Place); paving in bad repair in 1686 (Ford 42); in 1724, the chancel belonged to one Edward Woodward (Ford 113); the parish had c.70 families in 1724 and a population of 611 in 1801.

197B Painted wooden panel commemorating the bequest of Rev. Jeremiah SMITH, dated 1815

-  West tower, North wall, above head height.

-  137(W) x 106(H)~Faded; dirty.

-  Black painted fluted frame with roundels at corners; in centre, M.I. painted in black on grey.

-  Rev. Jeremiah Smith, of Woodside, Peasmarsh. Details of bequest.


197C Mural monument for Robert MASCALL, d. 1815, his wife and children

-  Sanctuary, North wall, above head height.

-  128(W); (H) inaccessible~Good; faded.

-  A freestone support; a black slate baseplate; the monument in mixed marbles; at the top a draped urn; in centre, M.I. (11 lines, engraved) filling most of panel; signed (lower right): 'J. BACON. FT. LONDON'.

-  Robert Mascall, Esq., of Peasmarsh Place, magistrate, d. 26 Feb 1815, aet 52; his wife, Martha, d. 11 Sep 1845, aet 76; eldest daughter, Mary Jane, died Torquay, 20 Dec 1810, aet 19; only son, Robert Curteis Mascall, Esq., died Venice, 19 May 1816, aet 21[?].

-  M.I. in 2 stages; pointed top; base moulding and corbels.

-  Rev., Jeremiah Smith of Woodside, Peasmarsh, rector of Berwick, vicar of Wartling, d. 5 Jul 1815, aet 60; his widow, Ann, d. 13 Jun 1822, aet 67, daughter of Edward Leeds, Esq., of North Milford, Yorkshire.

-  Choir, South wall, high.

-  59(W) x 105(H)~Very good.

-  M.I. on oval panel with foliage in relief; pointed top; the motto 'Blessed are the weak' below; signed (lower right): 'BACON, FT. LONDON'.

-  Elizabeth Delves, d. 9 Apr 1819, aet 25; youngest daughter of Rev. J. Smith of Woodside, Peasmarsh, and wife of Rev. William Delves, rector of Catsfield.

-  M.I. (8 lines, engraved) on an oval panel; above, an urn; below, a decorated corbel.
