(201) PEVENSEY, St. Nicholas
Mostly Early English, much rebuilt by GG Scott Jun (North chapel) - Nairn & Pevsner (581); chancel reported in 1686 (Ford 51) to belong to Dr George Stradling, Dean of Chichester and to be in a very bad state of repair, though fine by 1724 (Ford 51); rebuilding and somewhat remote ownership of chancel explains notable absence of ledgers and mural monuments in this spacious and ancient church; the ancient parish had 26 families in 1724 and a population of 192 in 1801.

- 258(W) x 384(H); effigy 180(L)~Restored; colour visible; M.I.s almost lost.
- Largely alabaster; other coloured marbles; effigy semi-recumbent on black slate on a sarcophagus (head to West), all on modern base; 2 M.I.s (engraved, gilded) on inlaid slate panels on face of sarcophagus; to left and right, polished black Corinthian columns set forward; behind, flat pilasters decorated with strap-work and ribbon-work; 2 female allegories, left and right, with gilded hair; a semi-circular arch over effigy, with small blank shields in the spandrels and ribbon-work; M.I. (8 lines, shallow engraved, gilded) on rectangular slate panel; over, a cornice with obelisks left and right on black bases and behind and between, a pointed pediment with a column achievement at the apex; prominent decorated waves and scrolls.
