(202) PIDDINGHOE, St. John

North arcade Norman; South arcade of c.1200; North and South chapels early 13th century; all rebuilt in 1882 - VCH (VII 68), Nairn & Pevsner (582) and SNQ (VII 50) with plan; a pre-restoration view in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 125); reportedly fine but for North aisle pavement in 1724 (Ford 140); South aisle (1882) built over an ancient burial place (see 202F); the parish had 23 families in 1724 and a population of 194 in 1801; unusually, Horsfield (Sussex I 195-6) omits to mention the monuments at Piddinghoe.


202A Mural monument for William DAVIES, d. 1830

-  Nave, North wall, West end, facing South, high up.

-  c.61(W) x c.132(H)~Good.

-  M.I. (11 lines) on upper 80% of white marble oval tablet; moulded frame set portrait-wise; above, urn in relief; below, scrolled triangular corbel.

-  William Davies, d. 3 Mar 1830, aet 80; his wife, Sara, d. 28 Jan 1820, aet 70; grandson William Waterman.


202B Mural monument for Edward WATERMAN, d. 1789

-  Nave, North wall, centre, facing South, high up.

-  c.61(W) x c.132(H)~Good.

-  Matches 202A; M.I. (9 lines); upper 50%.

-  Edward Waterman, d. 19 Sep 1789, aet 46; his wife, Francies [sic], d. 22 Jan 1794, aet 52.


202C Mural monument for Fanny and Edward WATERMAN, d. 1821 and 1840

-  Nave, North wall, East end, facing South, high.

-  c.61(W) x c.132(H)~Fair; crack (upper right).

-  Matches 202A; M.I. in upper 80%.

-  Fanny Waterman, d. 13 Mar 1821, aet 36; wife of Edward Waterman, d. 24 Aug 1840, aet 61.


202D Mural monument for Elizabeth and John FAULCONER, d. 1812 and 1823

-  Nave, North wall, towards chancel arch, facing South, high up.

-  (W) unknown x c.130(H)~Good; faded.

-  M.I. (10 lines, engraved, black) on a white rectangular marble tablet set landscape-wise; thin red inset border; above, a moulded cornice in grey-veined marble and an urn; below, in grey-veined marble, a curved apron between 2 corbels with roundels.

-  Elizabeth Faulconer, d. 11 Mar 1812, aet 18, eldest daughter of Thomas C. Faulconer, Esq., and Sarah; also John Faulconer, d. 28 Dec 1823, aet 17, son of T. C. Faulconer, Esq., and Mary.


202E Mural monument for Mary Ann TOMPSETT, d. 1812

-  Between South aisle and chancel, on pillar, facing East, at head height.

-  53(W) x 36(H)~Good.

-  M.I. (4 lines, engraved, black) on unframed white marble tablet with pointed top and squared bottom; above, relief of butterfly and foliage.

-  Mary Ann Tompsett, 16 Jan 1812 - 3 Nov 1812, daughter of Joseph Tompsett and Mary Ann Tompsett.


202F Mural monument for Francis WINTON, d. 1821

-  South aisle wall, towards East end, facing North, at head height.

-  75(W) x 46(H)~Good.

-  M.I. (7 lines, engraved, black) on unframed grey marble tablet set landscape-wise.

-  Francis Winton, d. 1821; his wife, Sarah d. 1806; their issue, unnamed, died in infancy.
