(203) PLAYDEN, St. Michael

Essentially c.1200 - VCH (IX 161) and Nairn & Pevsner (583); for a view from the North-East see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 126); paving reported as bad in 1686 but repaired by 1724 (Ford 42); parish had 12 families in 1724 and a population of 179 in 1801.

-  M.I. fills surface of a cream freestone slab, head to East.

-  Stephen Wilmshurst, d. 31[?] May 1742[?], aet 41; his wife, Ann, d. 10 Apr 1737, aet 25; their daughter, Elizabeth d. 24 Sep 1758, aet 27; [their son], Stephen Wilmshurst, d. 24 Apr 1781, aet 43.

-  North aisle floor, near West end.

-  58(W) x 87(L)~Very worn; cracked.

-  M.I. (2 lines, now engraved, Dutch) on a limestone slab; engraved decoration of 2 barrels and crossed fork and mash stick.

-  Sanctuary, on wall above Priest's (South) door.

-  90(W) x 103(H)~Good; badly faded above.

-  Unframed panel; above, a cornice; at top, pointed pediment with lion in centre; palmettes flanking; below, corbels left and right and arms in centre.
