(207) POYNINGS, Holy Trinity

Perpendicular (after 1369); North transept was Montague Chapel, the South transept was the Poynings chapel - Nairn & Pevsner (586); plans in SNQ (4 111) and Holland (SAC 15 33), with external view from North-East (p.46); condition reported in 1724 to be fine (Ford 142).


207A Mural monument for Dame Mary BALL, d. 1832, and Sir Alexander John BALL, d. 1809

-  Sanctuary, North wall, at head height.

-  114(W) x 190(H)~Very good.

-  M.I. (100%) on white tablet on a black baseplate; urn on plinth, cornice on attached hexagonal columns.

-  Dame Mary Ball, d. 28 Sep 1832, aet 85; widow of Sir Alexander John Ball, Bart., captain of HMS Alexander, rear admiral of H.M. Red Squadron and Governor of Malta, d. 25 Oct 1809, aet 52, another memorial at Malta.


207B Mural monument for George BEARD, d. 1786

-  Sanctuary, East wall, South of East window, at head height.

-  70(W) x 133(H)~Very good; fading.

-  M.I. on white tablet; above, dark-veined marble with curved; below, an escutcheon.

-  Rev. George Beard, 54 years curate and rector at Poynings, d. 25 Jun 1786, aet 77; unnamed sibling(s); his many virtues (piety, zeal, fraternal affection, patience, frugality, generosity, charity).


207C Mural monument for Charlotte WHITCOMBE, d. 1806

-  Sanctuary South wall, above head.

-  72(W) x 55(H)~Very good; faded.

-  M.I. (12 lines) fills a light grey, veined marble tablet, unframed, set landscape-wise.

-  Charlotte Whitcombe, d. 20 Jul 1806, aet 36; her brother, Francis Whitcombe, rector of Poynings.


207D Grave marker for one 'LRR', dated 1817

-  Nave floor, crossing, South side.

-  25 x 25~Very good.

-  Set with head to East, a grey hexagonal stone, inscribed 'L.R.R. / 1817'.


207E Mural monument for Thomas and Lucy PIPON, d. 1830 and d. 1829

-  Nave, South wall, above head.

-  80(W) x 48(H)~Very good.

-  M.I. (8 lines) fills a white unframed tablet.

-  Thomas Pipon, Esq., died at Brighton, 16 Feb 1830, aet 85; his wife, Lucy, d. 7 Dec 1829, aet 74.
