(208) PRESTON, St. Peter

Originally a chapel of ease (for St. John's); now redundant; Early English, in flint - Nairn & Pevsner (460); unpaved in 1686 (Ford 40); condition reportedly fine in 1724 (Ford 143); restored generally in c.1872; chancel restored in 1878; restored again after a fire of 1906; the parish had 20 families in 1724 and a population of 222 in 1801; the set of monuments on the West nave wall evidences the popularity of the church as a fashionable burial place, near Brighton, in the early 19th century.
