(21) BECKLEY, All Saints

13^th-century aisle arcades with Victorian dormers - Nairn & Pevsner (412-13) and a modern chapel South of chancel; plan in SNQ (XI 33); reportedly fine in 1686 (Ford); by 1724, chancels of both the rector and Sir John Shelley, Bart. in need of repair; external view by Grimm 1784, BL Add. MS 5670 f.13, see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 17); in 1777, Grose found nothing worth drawing (Farrant 120); the consistent widths of the ledgers 21F-21I suggest that they have been relocated as a group.

21A Mural monument for Samuel REEVES, d. 1823 and his wife Elizabeth, d. 1836

- South aisle wall, West of the South door; at head height.

- 77(W) x 67(H)~Very good; fading.

- A grey marble panel on rectangular slate backplate; straight cornice; M.I. (6 + 5 lines, engraved); unsigned.

- Samuel Reeves, Gent., d. 8 Apr 1823, aet 67; his wife Elizabeth, d. 12 Aug 1836, aet 90, daughter of Walter and Elizabeth Waters.

21B Mural monument for Richard POLLARD, d. 1794

- North-East chapel, West wall; above head height.

- 70(W) x 174(H)~Very good, water staining (edges), faded.

- In marble; above, an urn in half-relief on a block base; a convex oval panel set portrait-wise, bordered with black inset squares; below, a corbel decorative with foliage and hemispheres; M.I. (11 lines, engraved very shallow, black).

21C Mural monument for Mildred LEWIS, d. 1826

- South sanctuary, North wall, West end; above head height.

- 71(W) x 45(H)~Very good.

- A white marble panel on a black baseplate; M.I. (10 lines, engraved, black); signed (lower left): 'M.Vidler. SC. Hastings'.

- Mildred Lewis, d. 9 Oct 1826, aet 77; widow of Rev. H. Lewis; and sister of the late Rev. Dr Bethune of Rowfant House, Sussex.

21D Mural monument for Elizabeth HOOPER, d. 1819

- Sanctuary North wall, centre, above head height.

- 77(W) x 90(H)~Fine; fading.

- Unframed; white marble on a black baseplate set portrait wise; M.I. (19 lines, engraved, black).

- Mrs Elizabeth Hooper, of Hailsham, d. 8 Oct 1819; financial details of her charitable donation.

21E Mural monument for Odiarne HOOPER, d. 1769 and many descendants

- Sanctuary North wall, East end, above head height.

- 151(W) x 210(H)~Good; faded.

- In mixed marbles; below, coloured hard-stone decorative; above the M.I., a fluted frieze; a moulded entablature between the 2 M.I.s; coloured heraldry on apron.

- Escutcheon, then M.I. (Latin, engraved) fills surface of a black slab; head to West.

- Thomas Hooper, A.M., vicar of Beckley (52 years), died aet 79; son of Thomas Hooper of Mayfield; his wife, Mary Lloyd of London; their issue - 7 children, including Odiarne.

- Choir floor, West end.

- 114(W) x 195(L)~Very good.

- M.I. (engraved) fills surface of a black slab; head to West; final 5 lines added after 1811.
