(210) PYECOMBE, The Transfiguration

Norman nave and chancel with 19th-century alterations - Nairn & Pevsner (587); reportedly in fine condition in 1724 (Ford 143); the church was at a staging-post for the London coach (Brighton, Pyecombe, Cuckfield) but nothing survives from this period; the parish had 14 families in 1724 and a population in 1801 of 134; surviving ledgers have been arranged down the nave.


210A Mural monument for Michael BARRETT, d. 1702, and others

-  Sanctuary North wall, North-East corner, at head height.

-  55(W) x 110(H)~Good; faded.

-  2 grey marble panels combined; upper panel with shouldered, domed top and M.I. (10 lines); lower panel has M.I. (7 lines) in upper 50% of its surface.

-  Rev. Michael Barrett, rector of Pyecombe, d. 29 Sep 1702, aet 71; his widow, Anne, daughter of Edward Kelyng, Esq.; issue - eldest son, Michael, aet 19, buried at Pyecombe; youngest son, Edward, d. 13 Mar 1698/9, aet 20, buried at Oxford; 3 other unnamed sons; daughter, Hester died an infant, buried Pyecombe; and an unnamed daughter.


210B Floor slab for Thomas NORTON, d. 1722/3

-  Sanctuary floor, South-East corner.

-  46(W) x 72(L)~Cracked.

-  M.I. (8 lines, engraved) fills surface of a freestone slab; head to West.

-  Thomas Norton, d. 20 Jan 1722/3, aet 4; son of Thomas Norton, Gent., and Ann.


210C Ledger for Sir Lewis BEAUMONT, d. 1738

-  Chancel floor, North of centre.

-  83(W) x 180(L)~Sound; damaged edges.

-  M.I. (English and Latin) fills surface of a black slab; head to West.

-  Rev. Sir Lewis Beaumont, Bart., rector of Pyecombe for 36 years, d. 23 Dec 1738, aet 64.

-  M.I. (7 lines, engraved) on upper 35% of a freestone (Horsham?) slab; head to West.

210E Floor slab for Elizabeth BEAUMONT, d. 1750

-  Traces of M.I. (engraved) visible in the upper (W) 60% of a pale cream freestone slab.
