(217) ROTTINGDEAN, St. Margaret
Norman nave, remainder Early English, much restored by G G Scott, 1856 - Nairn & Pevsner (592-3) and A. Hussey, 'On Rottingdean Church in 1855' (SAC 9 67-70); pavement reported as utterly decayed in 1686; the chancel was repaired by Pelling between 1699 and 1724 (Ford 36, 145); the parish had 28 families in 1724 and a population of 543 in 1801; Horsfield (Sussex I 188) noted unspecified slabs to Beards in the aisle, probably 217A-C.

- M.I. (31 lines, engraved, black) fills a white marble tablet set portrait-wise; unframed; engraved, chamfered border; black baseplate; 2 small white corbels.
- Elizabeth Fothergill, died at Brighton, 2 Oct 1800, aet 59; widow of John Fothergill, Esq., of Handsworth, Staffordshire; issue - 4 sons and 3 daughters, all unnamed; her many virtues, analogies with scriptural Martha and Mary; she died during a short visit to the coast.
