(227) SELMESTON, St. Mary

A Perpendicular church; major 19th-century restorations under Rev. William Douglas Parish; South aisle of 1867 - Nairn & Pevsner (604-5); parish had 17 families in 1724 and a population of 130 in 1801; many of the original M.I.s on stone slabs and tablets were re-located and refashioned on brasses during the 19th-century restoration.


227A Wall-mounted brass for Matthias CALDICOTT, d. 1808

-  Nave, East wall, South-East corner facing West, at head height.

-  49(W) x 31(H)~Very good.

-  M.I. (5 lines, engraved, in red / black) on a brass plate; ornament; at the top, a cross.

-  Matthias Caldicott, Gent., of Sherington in Selmeston, d. 19 Feb 1808, aet 53.


227B Ledger for Matthias CALDICOTT, d. 1719

-  Chancel floor , near North wall, close to sanctuary rail.

-  55(W) x 100(L)~Fine.

-  Escutcheon, then M.I. (4 lines, engraved) fills a pale freestone slab.

-  Matthias Caldicott, Gent., of Sherrington, d. 2 Feb 1719, aet 65.


227C Wall monument for Dame Beatris BRAY, dated 1532

-  Chancel North wall.

-  191(W) x 201(H) x 66(D)~Fine; local damage; extensive restorations (M.I.).

-  In freestone; arched and panelled recess; M.I. (2) on back wall; Tudor arch; foliage in spandrels; flanking, attached, faceted pilasters; another M.I. (1) in frieze; above, cresting; plain ledger; below, tomb-chest with further M.I. (3); 4 decorative quatrefoils.

227E Floor-mounted brass for Catherine and Mark SKINNER, both d. 1819

-  Chancel floor, centre.

-  61(W) x 94(L)~Good.

-  M.I. (engraved, red/black paint) on brass strip round edge of black slab; gilded cross in centre; head to West or East.

-  Catherine Skinner, d. Aug 1819, infant; daughter of Mary Skinner, d. Sep 1819, aet 26; and James Skinner, Esq., of Sherrington; also their daughter, Sarah Ann Skinner, d. 26 Oct 1837, aet 21; also James Skinner, Esq., of Sherrington in Selmeston, d. 5 Nov 1873, aet 88; motto: 'In affectionate remembrance'.


227F Floor-mounted brass for Ann COX, d. 1741

-  Nave floor, just West of chancel step.

-  82(W) x 85(L)~Good.

-  Arms (engraved) on centre of black slab; head to West; M.I. (engraved, red/black paint) on brass strips on top and sides;.

-  Ann Cox, d. 1741, aet 57; daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Rochester, and widow of William Cox of Stanstead, Kent.


227G Brass grave marker for Ann MOCKETT, d. 1796

-  Nave floor.

-  15(W) x 15(L)~Good.

-  M.I. (engraved red paint) on brass lozenge ; crosses (red paint).

-  Ann Mockett, d. 1796, aet 26, wife of Henry Mockett.


227H Floor-mounted brass for Henry ROGERS, d. 1639

-  South aisle floor.

-  Mary Rochester, d. 7 Mar 1683, aet 6; daughter of Robert Rochester, Jnr and his wife, Elizabeth.
