(250) STREAT Parish Church
Early history is obscure; over-restored; South aisle of 1854 - Nairn & Pevsner (610-11); view from North-West in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 155); VCH (VII 115); condition reportedly fine in 1724 when patron was William Dobell of Folkington (Ford 154); the Streat estate was built up by the Dobells during the earlier 17th century (see 250A-B); the manor passed to the Lanes after the marriage of Dr Thomas Lane to William Dobell's niece, Mary, in 1748 - Budgen (Dobell 1ff) and Radcliffe (SAC 66 123-135); the parish had 25 families in 1724 and a population of 112 in 1801; Horsfield (Sussex I 233-4) notes only the Dobell vault on North side of chancel and the M.I.s on coffins (see Additions), curiously, not the monuments.
250A Mural monument for Mary DOBELL, d. 1764
- Nave North wall, East of North door, above head height.
- 114(W) x 290(H)~Excellent, faded.
- Much of it in coloured marbles; in centre, a M.I. on white marble framed rectangular panel; below, an ornamental apron with pair of cherubs; above, arms and an urn in low relief; decorated with garlands and rocaille work, all of highest quality.
- Mary Dobell, d. 20 May 1764, aet 74: widow of William Dobell, Esq.; issue - 1 daughter, still living; her virtues, piety, etc.
250B Mural monument for William DOBELL, d. 1752
- Nave North wall, East of 250A.
- 170(W) x 310(H)~Excellent; faded.
- An arch-topped M.I. in moulded frame; decorated borders; below, apron with 3 cherubim; above, a broken pediment enclosing an achievement; on the cornice flaming lamps (left and right); urn in centre; decorated garlands and swags throughout; in marbles, mainly white but also grey, pink and yellow.
250C Mural monument for Thomas LANE, d. 1779, and descendants
- North chapel, North wall, above head-height.
- c.87(W) x 197(H)~Excellent.
- M.I. (22 lines, engraved) on a simple unframed panel; in grey slate apron below, a cherub; above, broken pediment in white and grey marbles, with achievement.
- Thomas Lane, Esq., M.D., of Southover, Lewes, d. 1779, aet 74; his wife, Mary, d. 1798, aet 84, daughter of Walter Dobell, merchant of London; their son, Thomas Lane, Esq., of Bradbourne Place, Kent, and of Street, d. 11 Jun 1805, aet 50; also, his widow, Mary, died at Southampton, 4 Oct 1833.
