(254) TARRING NEVILLE, St. Mary
An Early English church - Nairn & Pevsner (611); in 1724 it was reported that the chancel was in poor condition (Ford 1182); the parish had 11 families in 1724 and a population of 74 in 1801; members of the Geere family were parsons and land-occupiers at Tarring Neville through several generations (1785 - R. Davey 197); they also held Pett (see List of Rectors at Pett church: 1750 - Augustin Diones Geere; 1774 - Diones Geere); not all of them were wholly virtuous - in 1675, a churchwarden at Rottingdean presented one Dionys Geere as a non-attender at church, see Johnstone (18), and C. Brent (84) notes that someone of that name was charged with assault in the 1790s; note the grave markers for the daughters of the Rev. Dionis Geere II in front of the main altar: 'E.G.', 'A.G.', 'M.G.' and 'G.G.'.
