(258) TICEHURST, St. Mary
Mostly of the 14th century - Nairn & Pevsner (612), VCH (IX 256); for a view of 1785 see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 161) from South-East; a 1686 report noted that the great chancel belonging to Mr Hartridge was in poor repair and Mr Apsley's and another smaller chancel also needed some work (Ford 116); the sanctuary paving was still poor in 1724; some of the May monuments are unidentifiable; one Thomas May ordered his own burial in the South chapel in 1551, see Rice & Godfrey (4 238), another was lord of the manor in 1785 (see R. Davey); for the earlier ancestral history of the many Roberts commemorated at Ticehurst see Tittler; see Willatts (SAC 125 102) for the iron slabs here; the parish had 150 families in 1724 and a population of 1436 in 1801.
