(263) TWINEHAM, St. Peter
Early Tudor brick - Nairn & Pevsner (614); repaired and some pews rebuilt in 1721, see Turner (SAC 18 154); reportedly in very good condition in 1724 (Ford 155) when there were 26 families; a population of 238 in 1801; Horsfield (Sussex I 248) makes a general reference to the Stapley slabs here; the Stapleys, long established at Twineham, included amongst their number Anthony, one of five Sussex MPs to vote in favour of the execution of Charles I in 1648/90; the will of one Richard Stapley of 1546 included the words: 'I will yt the greater stone to be laid upon me and the lesser stone upon my wiff', see Rice & Godfrey (4 261).
