(265) UDIMORE, St. Mary
Norman nave with early 13th-century chancel - Nairn & Pevsner (615-6); a view in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 167); see too VCH (IX 173); Horsfield (Sussex I 512) reports a former South aisle; chancel paving reported to be poor in 1686, especially at East end, repairs undertaken by 1724 (Ford 116); parish had 36 families in 1724 and a population of 321 in 1801; as he passed in 1777, Grose noted the Freebody brasses (265I). 265C, F, G and H refer to the mememto mori in their M.I.s, an unusual thematic concentration.
