(292) WESTHAM, St. Mary

Norman nave and South transept; 14th-century North arcade - Nairn & Pevsner (625-6); for plan see SNQ (II 115); in 1686, it was reported that everything was in need of repair, including the Thatcher chancel (Ford 51); by 1724, the 'burial place belonging now to Mr Medley extreamely [bad]: [and] promised and ordered to be forthwith repaired'; also, the chancel (owned by Spencer Compton, Esq) was very poor (Ford 185); Victorian installation of a new brick floor and wooden pews on a raised dais resulted in the creation of an area for relocated slabs in the North aisle and slabs from the South-East or from the Priest House Chapel were perhaps also relocated here? The parish had significant communities of papists, nine amongst c. 200 communicants in 1603, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns), and Presbyterians in its total of 49 families in 1724 (Ford) and the population grew fast in the 18th century (293 in 1751 becoming 560 in 1801; inexplicably, Horsfield (Sussex I 302-3) cites no monuments at Westham.
