(298) WILMINGTON, St. Mary & St. Peter
Norman chancel, Early English South aisle - Nairn & Pevsner (630) and G. Cooper, 'Illustrations of Wilmington Priory and Church' (SAC 4 37-66); the chancel, reported to be in poor state in 1686, was repaired by 1724 (Ford 52, 187); the parish had 35 families in 1724 and a population of 236 in 1801.

- M.I. (engraved, black) fills a rectangular white marble panel; engraved squared border, set portrait-wise.

James Capper, M.A., of St. Johns College, Cambridge, prebendary of Chichester, rector of Ashurst, Kent, and vicar of Wilmington for 56 Years, d. 2 Mar 1835, aet 81; his first wife, Catherina Jane, d. 2 Jan 1787, aet 35, eldest daughter of Walter Biddulph, Esq., of Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire; his second wife, Ann, d. 16 Jun 1843, aet 80, only daughter of James Nicklin, Esq., of Hackney, Middlesex; quotes Psalms LIV. 4.

- Rev. William Edwards, rector of Denton and West Dean, previously vicar of Wilmington, d. 26 Mar 1731, aet 80, 'after 60 years painfull & diligent Labours in the work of the Ministry'; his wife, Frances; quotes I Timothy 4 & 8.
