(298) WILMINGTON, St. Mary & St. Peter

Norman chancel, Early English South aisle - Nairn & Pevsner (630) and G. Cooper, 'Illustrations of Wilmington Priory and Church' (SAC 4 37-66); the chancel, reported to be in poor state in 1686, was repaired by 1724 (Ford 52, 187); the parish had 35 families in 1724 and a population of 236 in 1801.


298A Mural monument for Rev. James CAPPER, d. 1835, and his first wife, d. 1787

-  North transept, West wall, high up, now enclosed by offices.

-  Inaccessible (reported to be large)~Condition appears fine.

-  M.I. (engraved, black) fills a rectangular white marble panel; engraved squared border, set portrait-wise.

-  Rev. James Capper, M.A., of St. Johns College, Cambridge, prebendary of Chichester, rector of Ashurst, Kent, and vicar of Wilmington for 56 Years, d. 2 Mar 1835, aet 81; his first wife, Catherina Jane, d. 2 Jan 1787, aet 35, eldest daughter of Walter Biddulph, Esq., of Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire; his second wife, Ann, d. 16 Jun 1843, aet 80, only daughter of James Nicklin, Esq., of Hackney, Middlesex; quotes Psalms LIV. 4.


298B Ledger stone for Rev. Henry HODSDEN, d. 1740/1

-  Chancel floor, near North wall, before rail.

-  100(W) x 200(L)~Good; cracked.

-  Escutcheon, then M.I. (12 lines, engraved) fill surface of polished black stone slab; set head to East.

-  Rev. Henry Hodsden, vicar of Willingdon and Westham, previously vicar of Wilmington, d. 20 Mar 1740/1, aet 79.


298C Ledger stone for Rev. William EDWARDS, d. 1731, and his wife Frances

-  Chancel floor, near South wall, before rail.

-  114(W) x 200(L)~Excellent.

-  Escutcheon in roundel, then M.I. (12 lines (9 + 3 lines), centred, engraved) on a black polished slab, set head to East.

-  Rev. William Edwards, rector of Denton and West Dean, previously vicar of Wilmington, d. 26 Mar 1731, aet 80, 'after 60 years painfull & diligent Labours in the work of the Ministry'; his wife, Frances; quotes I Timothy 4 & 8.


298D Ledger stone for John SUNDERLAND, d. 1681/2

-  Chancel floor, West end, South side of pulpit.

-  86(W) x 63(L)~Good.

-  M.I. (4 lines, engraved) in upper 50% of Horsham stone (?) slab; head to North.

-  John Sunderland, of Milton Street, buried 7 Feb 1681.

-  South aisle floor, along South wall.

-  99(W) x 202(L)~Very good.

-  M.I. (19 lines, engraved) in upper 75% of polished black slab; fleur-de-lys motif in 4 corners; decorative border; head to West.

-  Rev. John Hubbersty, vicar of Wilmington and rector of Folkington, d. 4 Feb 1779, aet 49; his wife, Elizabeth; their issue - second daughter, Katherine, d. 23 Feb 1768, an infant; last daughter, Phillippa, d. 17 Jan 1775, an infant.

-  South aisle floor, West end, partly obscured by walling and furnishings.

-  John Honey, Esq., late of Ditchling, born Wilmington, buried 14 Nov 1694, aet 68; his wife, Anne, died earlier in 1694, first daughter of Sir Thomas Culpepyr, of Folkington, Knt.
