(48) CATSFIELD, St. Laurence

Norman nave & Early English chancel; 13th-century North-East chapel - Nairn & Pevsner (468); North aisle of 1845, when chancel also restored, see Leeney (SAC 84 147); South view in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 35) (BL Add. MS 5670 f.33 & 5676 f.94); for plan see SNQ (V 145); the chancel was in need of repair in 1686 and the work done by 1724 (Ford); in 1603 Lady Montague was recorded as the protector of two households in the parish of non-church attenders although the patron of the living was John Ashburnham, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns).


48A Mural monument for John FULLER, d. 1810

-  Nave, West wall, facing East, high.

-  60(W) x 90(H)~Good; faded.

-  In white marble; rectangular panel set landscape-wise with trophies in relief; above, inverted scrolls as pediment; below, M.I. (engraved, black) fills a panel flanked by more scrolls, with cornice and base mouldings; 2 brackets with foliage decoration and more mouldings at foot; signed (lower right): 'NOLLEKENS Ft'.

-  John Fuller, Esq., of Catsfield House, magistrate for fifty years, d. 31 Mar 1810, aet 85; his nephew, also John Fuller, Esq., of Rosehill.


48B Mural monument for Edward STAPLEY, d. 1720

-  North-East chapel floor, against South wall, facing North.

-  89(W) x 134(H)~Very worn.

-  M.I. (engraved) fills a freestone dome-topped slab; squared bottom; ornamental shoulders.

-  Edward Stapley, M.A., rector of Catsfield from 1708, and rector of Penhurst from 1707, d. 25 Dec 1720, aged 43; son of William Stapley, of Allington, yeoman, and his wife, Eleanor.


48C Ledger for Lady [Jane] PELHAM, d. 1686

-  Chancel floor, North of centre, partly obscured by furnishings.

-  60(W) x 150(L)~Worn; restored?

-  M.I. (12 lines, engraved, English and Latin) in upper 80% of a black slab (marble?); head to West.

-  Lady Pelham, d. 19 May 1686, daughter of James Huxley, Esq., of Dornford, Oxford and his wife, Elizabeth.


48D Ledger for Olive WARDROPER, d. 1766

-  Chancel floor, South of centre, partly obscured by furnishings.

-  60(W) x 150(L)~Fine, diagonal crack.

-  M.I. (21 lines, engraved) on upper 80% of black (marble?) slab); head to West.

-  Olive Wardroper, died in childbed, 7 Jul 1766, aet 20; daughter of James Markwick, Esq., and Mary; and wife of Richard Wardroper, Gent.; issue - a daughter, [Mary], d. Jan 1767, infant; her virtues.
