(61) CLAYTON, St. John the Baptist

11th-century core; chancel largely 19th century - Nairn & Pevsner (472-3); see plan in SNQ (III 187) with monuments marked; views of church in BL Add. MS 5672 f.33; 5677 f.48; condition reported to be fine in 1724 (Ford); floor slabs now inaccessible due to carpeting.

-  Nave floor, East end, at chancel step, inaccessible beneath carpet.

-  84(W) x 163(L)~(Assumed) fine.

-  (Reported) M.I. (engraved) in a freestone slab.


61B Mural monument for Samuel BETHELL, d. 1803

-  Sanctuary, East wall, North of East window, above head height.

-  94(W) x 140(H)~Very good; discolouring.

-  Backplate, formerly painted black; an oval tablet set portrait-wise; urn on top; below, moulded corbels.

-  Samuel Bethel, A.M., rector of Clayton, d. 5 Apr 1803, aet 47; his virtues.


61C Mural monument for Ann LUXFORD, d. 1729

-  Chancel, South wall, above head height.

-  73(W) x 210(H)~Fine; fading.

-  A scrolled frame; moulded plaster garlands; (double) cartouche painted in ochre; M.I. (painted not engraved); above, achievement; above that, painted escutcheon; at foot, cherub carved in freestone.

-  Ann Luxford, d. 21 Oct 1729, aet 67; daughter of John Luxford of Ockley.
