(73) DALLINGTON, St. Giles (also St. Margaret)

Condition reported to be fine in 1724 (Ford) but the church was largely rebuilt in 1864 - Nairn & Pevsner (479); for views see BL Add. MS 5676 f.2; 5670 f.66-67; the mural monuments from the old church were repositioned as a group in the North aisle, the ancient Randoll pew and burial place – Horsfield (Sussex I 569), having been found under the belfry; monuments at Dallington have been heavily cleaned.


73A Wall-mounted brass for Ann CRAUFURD, d. 1771

-  North aisle, North wall, far West end.

-  37(W) x 50(H)~Good.

-  M.I. on a decorated brass lozenge; raised ornamental edging.

-  Ann Craufurd, d. 10 Sep 1771, aet 61; widow of Col. George Craufurd.


73B Mural monument for Ann NORTH, d. 1780

-  North aisle, North wall, uppermost, grouped with 73C-D.

-  61(W) x 45(H)~Sound; very cleaned.

-  M.I. (12 lines, engraved) fills an unframed white marble panel, with veining.

-  Ann North, d. 22 Feb 1780, aet 53; wife for 28 years of Rev. William North, vicar of Dallington; daughter of Thomas Wakeham, Gent., of Worth; her piety.


73C Mural monument for Mary MACKENZIE, d. 1770

-  North aisle, North wall, with 73B and D.

-  60(W) x 39(H)~Very cleaned; rust (top left and lower right).

-  M.I. (10 + 2 lines, engraved) fills a white marble panel; engraved, moulded edge.

-  Mary Mackenzie, d. 6 Apr 1770, buried in vault of Robert Randoll, Esq. (see 73I); wife of Gen John Mackenzie, d. 6 Oct 1791.


73D Brass for John MACKENZIE, d. 1791

-  North aisle, North wall, with 73B and C.

-  31(W) x 41(H)~Fine.

-  Escutcheon, then M.I. (5 lines, engraved) on a brass plate; Motto: 'SIC ITUR AD ASTRA'.

-  Lieut. Gen. John Mackenzie, d. 6 Oct 1791, aet 79.


73E Mural monument for Patrick George CRAUFURD, d. 1804, and his son

-  98(W) x 74(H)~Very cleaned; repaired.

-  M.I. (14 lines, engraved) on unframed white marble panel; moulded cornice over; below, brackets and Grecian decorative.

-  Patrick George Crauford, Esq., 19 Jan 1741 – 3 Feb 1804; only son of George Crauford, Lt. Col. (53rd Regiment of Foot), of Herrings Place; his first son George Crauford, Esq., 1 Oct 1779 – 9 Mar 1804.

-  M.I. (7 lines, engraved) in an unframed. undecorated white marble panel.

-  Jane Craufurd, 2 Feb 1753 – 4 Jul 1811; eldest daughter of Donald Macdonald, Lieut-Col. 84th Regiment of Foot and Brigadier-General in America; widow of P. G. Craufurd, of Herrings Place, Esq.
