(82) EAST BLATCHINGTON, St. Peter

With an Early English chancel - Nairn & Pevsner (482-3) and for plan see SNQ (XV 232); floor paving is reported missing in 1686, see Ford (54); condition described as generally fine in 1724, Ford (164); for Lambert's view from South-East of 1770 and one of a ruined chapel, see BL Add. MS 5766 f.76 & 5677 f.28; Horsfield (Sussex I 274-5) cites no monuments here.


82A Mural monument for Mary KING, d. 1822

-  Chancel North wall, above head height.

-  107(W) x 177(H)~Excellent.

-  Dark grey baseplate with shouldered, domed top; M.I. (10 + 6 + 3 + 3 + 4 lines, engraved) on a grey unframed marble tablet; flanked by Doric half-columns; over the capitals, an entablature with foliate decoration; base mouldings and corbels with roundel motifs; above the cornice, an escutcheon.

-  Mary King, d. 13 May 1822, aet 34, second daughter of Thomas Rogers, of Kingston near Lewes, Sussex; her husband, John King, Esq., of East Blatchington, d. 5 Jul 1853, aet 78; their issue - Henry, d. 22 Nov 1818, infant; John, d. 30 Jul 1821, aet 4; Mary, wife of Lieutenant George Watson, R.M., d. 12 Jan 1836, aet 25, at Stonehouse, Devon; and Elizabeth, d. 12 Feb 1908, aet 94, at Paignton, Devon, wife of Rev. Robert Nathaniel Dennis d. 17 Feb 1892, rector of East Blatchington.


82B Mural monument for William CHAMBERS, d. 1808

-  Sanctuary North wall, above head height.

-  87(W) x 180(H)~Very good; fading.

-  A black obelisk, unadorned, rises above & behind an altar topped by a course of fluted decoration; volutes left and right; on the altar, the initials 'WC'; below, base moulding & apron with M.I. (7 lines, engraved); signed (lower left): 'L & C PARSONS / LEWES'.
