(98) ETCHINGHAM, The Assumption & St. Nicholas

14th century throughout, but pre-Perpendicular, including collegiate chancel - Nairn & Pevsner (496-7), plan in SNQ (XV 155) and external view, see BL Add. MS 5670 ff.59-62; pavement reported missing in 1686, otherwise fabric was fine (Ford); Horsfield (Sussex I 588) notes nothing post-medieval.


98A Mural monument for John SNEPP, d. 1823, and descendants

-  Just West of South door, above head height.

-  90(W) x 165(H)~Fine; 1 bracket lost (right).

-  On an irregular, decorative slate base; below, a white marble low relief portrait roundel (with quote from Horace); above, on a trapezoidal panel with a fan decoration over and 2 brackets below (1 lost), a M.I. (engraved); at top, an escutcheon; signed (neck of portrait): 'G.B. BIRCH, Sc LONDON 1859'.

-  John Snepp, gent., of Haremare, d. 18 Aug 1823, aet 69; his wife, Hannah, d. 11 Oct 1832, aet 66; only issue - John, d. 25 Nov 1857, aet 68; his wife, Martha, d. 6 Jul 1873.


98B Ledger for Thomas CONSTABLE, d. 1773

-  North aisle floor, by side chapel.

-  92(W) x 178(L)~Lettering very good; edges worn.

-  M.I. (6 lines, engraved) in upper parts of a freestone slab.

-  Thomas Constable, Gent., of Ticehurst, d. 1 Jan 1773, aet 29.

-  South aisle chapel floor.

-  74(W) x 179(L)~Very worn; partly illegible.

-  Freestone slab with M.I. (engraved).


98D Ledger for Samuel FARNDEN, d. 1660

-  South chapel, against East wall, behind altar.

-  48(W) x 85(L)~Lettering good; edges very worn.

-  M.I. (6 lines, engraved) in upper 40% of a slate slab.

-  Samuel Farnden, d. 16 Nov 1660; son of Peter Farnden and Ann, eldest daughter of John Busbridge, Esq.


98E Engraved brasses for anonymous son of Sir Gyfford THORNHURST, dated 1626

-  South aisle floor, to West of side chapel.

-  Base: 49(W) x 96(L); Escutcheon: 19.5(W) x 17.5(H); M.I.: 30(W) x 19(H)~Fine.

-  2 brass plates towards the East (top) end of freestone slab; escutcheon over M.I. (7 lines).

-  Anonymous son of Sir Gyfford Thornhurst, Bart. and Susan, still living, only daughter of Sir Alex Temple, Knt; dated 1626.
