280C Mural monument for Susan TIRREY, d. 1637

-  Nave, North wall, near chancel steps, at head height and above.

-  123(W) x 205(H)~Very good; some damage to upper moulding of plinth, lower left.

-  In alabaster and coloured marbles around a M.I. (29 lines, Latin, engraved on slate); above, an achievement and swag within a broken, curved pediment; below, herms flank the M.I., partly obscured by allegorical figures of Labour (left) and Rest, with shovel and torch, the latter with one foot on a death's head, standing on large brackets; below, a scrolly apron with a cherub.

-  Susan Tirrey, died 1637; daughter of William Thomas, armiger, of West Dean; and wife of George Tirrey, of Grays Inn; her many virtues.
