Picture Database

During the research into the publication of Sussex Depicted, 1600-1800 by John Farrant he developed a database of Pictures, their Artists and their Owners.

The links shown in the left column give access to this database as follows:

Places gives a list of Places and by selecting one of these places a list of Pictures, Artists and Owners is displayed – from this list details of the individual Picture can be accessed.

Artists gives a list of Artists by surname and by selecting one of these artists a list of Pictures, Places and Owners is displayed – from this list details of the individual Picture can be accessed.

John Farrant compiled this database of Sussex pictures to underpin Sussex Depicted – Views and Descriptions 1600-1800 which the Society published as it centenary volume in 2001. This volume also drew on John’s research over many years on early writers on Sussex and artists of the county’s antiquities. His articles on some of those writers and on Victorian Sussex antiquaries have recently appeared in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2004). Other themes in his published work on Sussex history are harbours and seaborne trade, and early modern Brighton.

For 20 years he served on the Council of the Sussex Archaeological Society, for 10 of them as Honorary Treasurer. Paid work has been as an administrator at the University of Sussex and now as a consultant on higher education management (particularly in eastern Europe and Africa) and the digitisation of archive catalogues.
