Winchelsea Poor Law Records (1790-1841) – Supplement

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

The following transcriptions reflect the life of the town of Winchelsea and of its poor during the period covered by the published volume and beyond. With one exception it was not possible to include more than a passing reference to these documents in the published volume. They provide a revealing further insight into the life of a small community with its leadership strugging to balance the need to provide both practical support for and legal jurisdiction over its people. Each of the four transcriptions has its own introducton and index.

Permission from the County Archivist on behalf of East Sussex Record Office and the Mayor on behalf of Winchelsea Corporation for the use of documents included here is most gratefully acknowledged
