(118) GUESTLING, St. Laurence (or Lawrence)
Norman; enlargements to North side c.1200; arcades and Ashburnham or South chapel c.1300; Rector's chancel dilapidated in 1686; some Victorian replacements - Nairn & Pevsner (513); a 'heavy' restoration in 1886; a serious fire in 1890; view from South-East, see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 68); plan in SNQ 5 55; North chancel taken over & repaired by Sir Denis Ashburnham in 1686, see Ford (44); further repairs by his successor Sir William to North and South chancels - 1724 report in Ford (97); the parish had 109 communicants in 1603, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns); unusually, the only monuments at 118 are of the Renaissance period, both in a very battered state [fire of 1890?].
118A Mural monument for John CHEYNEY, d. 1603, and his wife Elizabeth
- Chancel, North wall, at head height.
- 145(W) x 179(H)~Poor; restored and reassembled; many losses.
- In various coloured marbles, slate and alabaster; 2 adult kneelers on cushions; in civil dress (he is armoured); no prayer desk; a restored colonette; female figure on right with daughter behind her; flanking, squared pillars; above, entablature with pillowy frieze; ribbon work; below, base moulding, gadroon ornament, M.I. on a framed slate panel set landscape-wise; at foot, plaque with a winged death's head relief.
- John Cheyney, Esq., d. 20 Sep 1603; his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of John [P]alme[r], Esq., of Lincoln's Inn; their issue, 1 son and 1 daughter (unnamed).

- South (Lady) Chapel, West wall, above head height.
- 85(W) x 140(H)~(Upper) Fine; (lower) damaged; colour.
- M.I. on rectangular, black marble panel; flanking, alabaster pilasters (damaged), ribbon work; above, achievement on black panel; below, motto on alabaster panel (damaged on left).
- Adam Ashburnham, Esq., d. 5 Jun 1597, aet 40; son of Laurence Ashburnham and Eve Adames; his wife, Elizabeth Twisden; issue (still living 1597) - Elizabeth, Laurence, John, Roger, Charles and Edward.
