(119) HAILSHAM, St. Mary the Virgin
Perpendicular; South aisle of 1870 - Nairn & Pevsner (513-14); in 1686, paving was needed; condition reportedly fine by 1724, see Ford (172): Hailsham had c.400 communicants in 1603, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns); Gunnis (Dict. 188) and Nairn & Pevsner (514) report works in terracotta by Harmer in the yard South-West of the church.

- In grey marble, a pointed pediment with a broken entablature on fluted brackets; enclosing an escutcheon with a Baroque frame; behind, a secondary order; below, M.I. (21 + 5 lines) on white marble tablet; irregular moulded frame; decorative border in raunce; below, base moulding and another M.I. (7 lines); flanking, squared pilasters and base moulding on scrolled corbels; at foot, another escutcheon in a Baroque frame; corbel decoration with ferns.

- M.I. (14 lines, engraved, black) fills a marble tablet; moulded ogival arched top; flanking, polished Doric half columns in black marble, flecked with white; straight base moulding; corbels with pointed bottoms; signed (under base moulding): 'H.W.DODD, EASTBOURNE'.
- Colonel Philip Van Cortlandt, of the Manor of Cortlandt, royalist in the American War of Independence, died at Hailsham, May 1814, aet 74; quotes Prov x vii.

- M.I. (11 lines, shallow engraved) fills an unframed marble panel with scalloped corners; set portrait-wise; below, freestone corbel; above, finial.

(15 lines, engraved, black) on marble; flanked by scrolls; below, 2 corbels with roundel decoration; black apron with crossed ferns decoration; a corbel.

- M.I. (7 lines, centred, engraved, black) on an unframed white rectangular panel set portrait-wise; flanked by pairs of dark grey fluted Ionic pilasters; entablature over, its centre breaking forward; above, a pyramid with decorated ball finial; achievement flanked by flaming torches; below, a cherubim flanked by scrolls, then death's head; at foot, a tiny bearded male face.

- White marble tablet, with inscription in Gothic lettering and coat of arms, a chevron between two fish-wheels.
- The family of Willard, Lords of the Manor of Ersham, since 1341. Amongst many members buried are Christopher Willard, d. 1500; Robert Willard, d. 1528, Nicholas Willard, d. 1543, and William Willard, d 1595. Erected by Lt-Col John Harry Willard on 25 Dec 1839.
