(140) ICKLESHAM, All Saints

The 3-bay arcades were built by c.1175, the North and South chapels are of c.1200; Teulon restorations of 1847-52 - Nairn & Pevsner (542-3), T.T. Churton 'Icklesham Church' (SAC 32 111ff) and G.M. Livett 'Three East Sussex Churches: Battle, Peasmarsh, Icklesham, Pt. III' (SAC 48 38-64); engraved internal view by Moss (1812); pavements of all 3 chancels reported as poor in 1686 (Ford 43); by 1724, North chancel still unpaved, others (owned by the parson, Mr William Burrell and Lady Winchelsea) were paved (Ford 98); monuments now located in the larger East end; for M.I.s and heraldry see Butler (SAC 14 259-262) and Lambarde (SAC 68 229-230).


140A Mural monument for Thomas Lewis COOPER, d. 1824

-  Choir, North wall, towards the West end, high.

-  110(W) x 160(H)~Good.

-  An unframed, white marble M.I. (23 [10 + 13] lines in 2 stages, engraved, black) with chamfered corners, set portrait-wise, within a frame of faded dark grey panels; gilded roundels in corners; pointed pediment and decorated apron; ornamental corbel.

-  Thomas Lewis Cooper, d. 4 Feb 1824, aet 7; eldest son of William and Martha Cooper and grandson of Thomas Cooper; also, his uncle, Robert Court [Cooper], d. 24 Nov 1824, aet 31, third son of Thomas Cooper; also, the latter's great grandson, Charles Herbert Cooper, A.R.I.B.A., 3 Oct 1862 - 7 Oct 1894, son of William George Cooper and Anne Elizabeth Cooper of Kensington; quoting, Titus III.1 and Wisdom III.1.

140C Burial marker for T[homas] C[OOPER], d. 1807

-  Choir aisle floor, between the stalls, towards the East end.

-  64(W) x 61(L)~Cracked, worn.

-  A freestone burial marker, head to East, marked 'T.C / 1807' on the South side.


140D Ledger for Katherine ODIARNE, d. 1740

-  Chancel floor, towards North side, between choir stalls and sanctuary, now partly covered by carpet.

-  80(W) x 185(L)~Worn.

-  A pale cream freestone slab with M.I.; head to West.


140E Floor monument for Rev. Thomas RICHARDS, d. 1843

-  Chancel, floor, near sanctuary rail, now obscured by carpet.

-  91(W) x 68(L)~Condition unknown.

-  M.I. cut in pale brown, freestone slab.

140F Mural monument for Arnold NESBITT, d. 1779

-  South chapel (St. Nicholas), South wall, at head height.

-  120(W) x c.240(H)~Good; recent careful repainting (arms).

-  M.I. (9 lines, engraved, black) fills an unframed light grey marble tablet set portrait-wise; moulded entablature set above and breaking forward of grey-veined, flanking panels; below, a decorated black and white ledge, then, an ornamental black baseplate with rosettes, drops, heraldry in relief and a white corbel; above, 2 flaming urns flank a third urn draped with a delicate bead decorated against a tall black backplate in obelisk form; signed (on the urn base): 'J.Marten Sculpr / Tenterden'.
