(177) MOUNTFIELD, All Saints
Norman nave; Early English chancel - Nairn & Pevsner (569); in 1724, the church was reported as in very good condition, chancel recently repaired by the Duke of Dorset (Ford 111); Harmer terracottas in the churchyard; Horsfield (Sussex I 564) notes only 177A, which suggests a later date for 177B-D.
177A Mural monument for Thomas HICKES, d. 1736
- Nave, North wall, nearly opposite the South door.
- c.85(W) x 140(H)~Fading.
- An elaborate achievement surmounts a flat cornice, supported on coloured pilasters and moulded capitals with rosette decorations; in the centre, an arched, flat M.I. (13 lines, engraved, black); brown-red hardstone pilasters flanking; below, a base moulding and an ornamental apron in grey marble.

- Nave North wall, North-East corner, above head height.
- 75(W) x 80(H)~Fine, staining.
- Unframed; a rectangular white M.I. panel is topped by a simple cornice and a pointed pediment with a decorated disk; below, tiny brackets with dentils.
- William Austen Righton, Esq., of Mountfield Park, died Dieppe, France, buried there, 5 Sep 1818, aet 38; widow unnamed.

- Chancel floor, South-East corner, against the South wall, partly obscured by furniture.

- M.I. (engraved) in upper parts of a freestone slab; head to the West.

- M.I. (25 lines, engraved, black) on a simple unframed, white marble tablet, set portrait-wise; brackets (formerly) ornamented with dentils below; above, a moulded cornice and a low, pointed pedestal.
- John Smee, Esq., civil servant (30 years East India Co.), died at Court Lodge, Mountfield, 27 Dec 1824, aet 56; issue - unnamed.
