(20) BATTLE, St. Mary the Virgin
A Norman church, rebuilt in Perpendicular - Nairn & Pevsner (407-8); for plan see SNQ (XI 7); John Smith of Rye and James Whitehead (1817) were working in the town and at the Abbey, Gunnis (Dict. 357, 431), although there are no signed monuments by them in the church; 20I is of national significance. Horsfield (Sussex I 530) makes the point that there are other monuments that he is unable to mention because of lack of space.

- In off-white marble; tabernacle of three 'pages' on a black base; cornice over; below, basement and a shelf; M.I. (left) - 3 engraved verses; M.I. (centre): beneath a pointed pediment - biography; M.I. (right) - 3 verses; signed (lower left): 'M.VIDLER. SC. HASTINGS'.
- Edmund Cartwright, D.D. F.R.S., poet, formerly fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, rector of Goadby Marwood, Leicestershire and prebendary of Lincoln, 24 Apr 1743 - 30 Oct 1823; monument erected by his widow, Susanna.

- 70(W) x 93(H)~Very good.
- A flat cornice with hanging garlands; above M.I. (23 lines, engraved, black) on an unframed panel; over a black slate base.
- Lt. Col. Kingsbury, Queens Royal Regiment, d. 14 Aug 1813, aet 46; saw action at Gibraltar, Egypt, Portugal, Spain and with Wellington.

- 90(W); (H) inaccessible~Good; faded; dirty.
- In trapezoidal shape; thin black baseplate with a pointed top; grey marble panel of same shape, unframed; 2 corbels; a moulded cornice; wreath in pointed pediment; signed (lower right): 'BEDFORD / 256 OXFORD STREET / LONDON'.
- Edward John Donne, died at Woodlands, Battle 15 Nov 1847, aet 28; his father, also Edward Donne, of Harley St. London; Edward John was survived by his parents.
20D Mural monument for Harriett SWAIN and her daughter Mary-Ann, both d. 1821
- North aisle, North wall, East of North door, high.

- A thin black baseplate; M.I. (24 lines, engraved, black) on unframed panel, set portrait-wise; flat cornice.
- Harriett Swain, died at Cefalonia, 12 Oct 1821, aet 37; wife of Major Swain, (36th Regiment); their daughter Mary-Anne Swain, d. 25 Jul 1821, aet 6; Harriett and Mary-Ann Swain both buried at St. Spiridion, Argostoli, Cefalonia.
