(212) RINGMER, St. Mary the Virgin
Described by Horsfield (Sussex I 350) as 'Truly Sussex  rude, irregular and ancient'; aisle arcades are 13th-14th century; chancel chapels are Perpendicular (perhaps c.1500 and after 1535); for poor state of fabric and missing tower in view from North-East see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 132); nave extended West and tower rebuilt in 1884-5, see W.F. Martin, 'Notes on the rebuilding of Ringmer church tower' (SAC 39 197-200), Nairn & Pevsner (587-8) and plan in SNQ (III 117); parish had c.300 communicants in 1603, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns); c.90 families in 1717; population of 897 in 1801; prominent were the Springetts (sometime Springate), see 212V, etc., of the Broyle who also owned property on Lewes High Street; series at Ringmer especially strong for 17th century and early 18th century.
