(273) WARBLETON, St. Mary

Mostly old walls; Early English chancel, Decorated North aisle, remainder Perpendicular - Nairn & Pevsner (619-20); SNQ (XIII 315) for plan; a view of 1782 from South-East in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 174); condition reported as fine in 1724 report (Ford); Gunnis (Dict. 188) and Nairn & Pevsner (619) cite terracotta monument here by Harmer (one subject d. 1813) in churchyard; the parish had c.120 families in 1724 and a population of 908 in 1801.

-  M.I. (7 lines, engraved) in band across centre of a black slab; head to West.

273B Mural for Martha HARCOURT, d. 1796, and her husband Henry, d. 1800

-  North aisle, North wall, opposite South door, above head height.

-  117(W) x 286(H)~Very good; local losses (head of heraldic supporter); faded.

-  In white marble low relief, standing female mourner resting arm on urn; shallow serpentine obelisk as baseplate; below, M.I. (engraved) in 2 stages on tablet, framed, serpentine edging; below that, a fluted base, brackets with dentils; arms in ornamental apron.

-  Martha Harcourt, d. 19 Sep 1796, aet 79; wife of Rev. Henry Harcourt, rector of Warbleton, d. 21 Aug 1800, aet 71.


273C Mural for Sir John LADE, d. 1740

-  North aisle, North wall, far East end, head height and above.

-  200(W) x 330(H)~Excellent; faded.

-  Portrait bust on pedestal adorned with scrolls and foliage, in a shallow arched niche with attached Corinthian columns, variegated marble flanking; outside the columns, scrolls set vertically with foliage; within, simple pilasters in darker grey marble; above, escutcheons (blank) with foliage decoration; at top, coffered pediment (no entablature); globe in centre; lamps flanking; below, decorative base moulding, brackets; ornamental apron with M.I. (engraved).

-  Sir John Lade, Bart., of St. Saviour's Southwark, MP, JP, Dep. Lieut. of Southwark and London, etc., d. 30 Jul 1740, aet 78; fifth and youngest son of Thomas Lade, Gent., of Warbleton; no wife; no issue; brother unnamed; his brother's grandson, John Inskip, now also John Lade, Esq.


273D Mural cartouche for John ROBERTS, d. 1688, and wife Anne, d. 1722

-  Chancel North wall, West end, above head height.

-  90(W) x 170(H)~Excellent; faded.

-  M.I. (engraved) on white marble cartouche; framed by decoration of fabric and cherubim; above, elaborate arms.

-  John Roberts, Gent., of the Priory, Warbleton, d. 26 Aug 1688, aet 58; his wife Anna, d. 20 Jan 1722, aet 90, daughter of Thomas Lade, Gent., of Barham, Kent; no issue; their nephew, John Lade, Esq.; his siblings, unnamed.


273E Ledger for Thomas BARTON, d. 1735, and his sister Frances, d. 1743

-  Nave floor, East end, near North aisle piers, largely obscured by furniture.

-  66(W) x 92(L)~Stained.

-  M.I. (engraved) fills a marble slab; head to West.

-  Thomas Barton, d. 19 May 1735, an infant; his sister, Frances, d. 29 Apr 1743, an infant; their parents Thomas and Catherine Barton.

273H Mural for Thomas ROBERTS, d. 1638

-  South wall, near pulpit.

-  84(W) x 163(H)~Local losses (cartouche of arms; lower cornice).

-  In coloured marbles and alabaster; Corinthian columns of touch; M.I. (11 lines, engraved) fill a slate tablet; above, elaborate entablature with broken ogival pediment; scrolled ends; achievement in the centre; below, heavy brackets and decorative apron with scrolls.


273I Mural for Benjamin Thomas Halcott COLE, d. 1850

-  Choir, South wall, above head height.

-  Inaccessible~Very good: faded.

-  Shallow black slate base; M.I. (10 lines, engraved) on unframed white marble panel; above, simple moulded cornice, pointed pediment; signed (lower right on base): 'WINTER.HASTINGS'.
