(283) WEST HOATHLY, St. Margaret

Norman nave & chancel, Decorated South aisle, 1870 restoration - Nairn & Pevsner (626-7); I.C. Hannah, 'West Hoathly Church' (SAC 76 201-211); in 1852, two slabs recorded by A. Hussey, Notes on the churches in ... Kent, Sussex and Surrey mentioned in the Domesday Book (239), in use as stepping stones to the tower, by 1940 these were affixed to the vestry wall with a third; by the later 1930s, the Victorian fittings were removed and the stone floor replaced to reveal 'gravestones' previously obscured by tiles or woodwork; altar rails obtained in Brighton, probably ex-Barcombe church - SNQ (VI 23); Willatts (SAC 125 102) notes four iron slabs here; the parish had 100 families in 1724 and a population of 794 in 1801.

- 75(W) x 180(H)~Very good.

- M.I. (engraved, black) fills a tablet; unframed; set portrait-wise; below, a grey marble base moulding; ornamental apron with volutes, foliage, a black ball finial and small escutcheon; above, moulded cornice and a broken scrolled pediment; lamp in centre.

- Thomas Sawyer, late of Hoathly Hill, d. 1 Oct 1705; his wife, Mary, d. 24 Mar 1737/8, aet 80; their issue - (sons) Thomas, d. 26 Aug 1728; and Stephen, d. 19 Jun 1761, aet 71; Stephen's widow, Elizabeth, d. 9 Mar 1772, aet 81; their issue, Anne, d. 19 May 1731, aet 3; Stephen, d. 5 May 1772, aet 46.

- South nave aisle, West wall, centre, at head height.

- 80(W) x 120(H)~Very good.

- M.I. (engraved, black) on upper 60% of a grey tablet set portrait-wise; moulded frame; domed top and keystone motif; below, an ornamental corbel with escutcheon.

- Rev. William Griffith, vicar of West Hoathly, d. 4 Mar 1720/1, aet 67; his wife, Anne; their issue - William, d. 28 Mar 1696, aet 5; Gainor, buried 23 Mar 1697/8, aet 10.

283C Mural monument for William CLIFFORD, d. 1802

- South nave aisle, North-West corner, West wall, high.

- 80(W) x 150(H)~Fine; faded.

- M.I. (3 lines, engraved, black) on upper 20% of a white tablet set landscape-wise within a dark border; flanked by shallow scrolls; below, a curved apron, small escutcheon, fan decoration and corbels; above, cornice with decorated urn in relief against a dark baseplate with domed top.

- 77(W) x 51(H)~Sound; faded; local losses (cornice).

- M.I. (12 lines, engraved, black) on simple white marble tablet with moulded cornice; black baseplate; 2 small corbels; signed (lower centre): 'WESTMINSTER MARBLE COMP^Y EARLS S^T'.
