(31) BISHOPSTONE, St. Andrew

Saxon, extended in the Norman and Early English periods, restored 1849 & 1885 - Nairn & Pevsner (418-9) and Godfrey (SAC 87 164-183); fabric reportedly fine in 1724 (Ford) when the living was held by Ezechial Bristed (for whom, see 164Q); for M.I.s see Simmons (SAC 19 185-188); for pre-restoration illustration by Sharpe - none showing monuments - see Godfrey (ibid.); monuments apparently reinstated after 19th-century restoration.

31A Ledger for [Ann] Wife of Henry DALLINDEAR, d. 1640

-  North aisle floor, aligned with North door.

-  98(W) x 150(L)~Pitting; wear; corners lost; legible.

-  M.I. (6 lines, engraved) in upper end of freestone slab; decorative motifs in corners; head to West.

31B Mural monument for Rev. James HURDIS, d. 1801

-  North-East choir wall, North-East corner, facing West, at head height.

-  (1) Lower: 62.5(W) x 38(H); (2) Upper: 67(W) x 79(H)~Good; local damage to (2).

-  (1) is a M.I. (8 lines, engraved and black, signed 'W.Hayley Esqr') on a rectangular tablet; a thin engraved border.@ (2) is a M.I. (15 lines, centred, engraved and black) on a raised oval tablet of grey marble.

-  Rev. James Hurdis, D.D., Professor of Poetry, Oxford and vicar of Bishopstone; d. 23 Dec 1801, aet 38; patron his four unnamed sisters.

-  Choir floor.

-  97(W) x 181(L)~Worn; recut.

-  M.I. (3 lines, engraved) in upper parts (W) of a sandstone slab; head to the West.

31D Mural monument for Catharine HURDIS, d. 1792

-  South-East choir wall, South-East corner, facing West, above head height.

-  67(W) x 79(H)~Fading; local damage (above).

-  M.I. (12 lines centred, engraved, black) on grey marble oval tablet, set portrait-wise.

-  Catherine Hurdis, d. 7 Aug 1792, aet 24; a brother, unnamed.

31E Mural monument for Mary BURGESS, d. 1755

-  South-East choir wall, South-East corner, facing West, at head height, below 31D.

-  77(W) x 72(H)~Worn; repaired.

-  M.I. (5 lines, engraved and black) on white marble tablet; pointed gable top; no entablature; base mouldings; simple slate pilasters flanking; below, simple blocked corbels and curved apron, both in grey marble; shabby ball finial.
