(157) LEWES, St. Anne

A long, narrow, Norman nave; chancel is Early English, restored in 1889 - Godfrey (SAC 69 159-69); South arcade late 12^th century; a 18^th-century West gallery - Nairn & Pevsner (551-2); fabric was 'fine' in 1724, the chancel having been repaired by the rector (Ford); for a view from North-East see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 96); the original dedication of this church - at Lewes 'Westout' - was to St. Mary; it was renamed in the 16^th century (SAC 131 201); there were c.50 families in the parish in 1724; the population was 590 in 1801; 157N-O have been brought within the building by means of a 19^th-century extension, see Godfrey in (SAC 68 284); there is an important series of mural monuments between the windows of the North aisle.

157A Mural monument for the LEWIS family, erected after 1825

- Nave, North wall, above North door, high.

- A white marble tablet on black marble composite baseplate with M.I.; mouldings top and bottom on 2 corbels with acanthus decoration; above, a female figure kneels at an altar with a rose dropping from a bowl; at top, a cornice, pointed pediment with palmettes flanking and an exhortation.

- Pendant to 157C; M.I. (26 lines, engraved, black) on grey marble tablet, set portrait-wise with cornice and base moulding; below, a decorated apron in a dark shelly stone with an escutcheon.

- In white and column marbles; M.I. set landscape-wise (6 lines, engraved) with decorated border and moulded frame; above, a scrolled pediment and an urn in relief; below, 2 scrolled corbels and a curved apron with traces of painted fern decoration.

William Gwynne, rector of Hamsey and St. Anne Lewes, d. 16 Apr 1818, aet 73; his wife, Elizabeth, d. 19 Apr 1810, aet 57; their issue - Rowland Gwynne, Major (10^th Regiment of Native Infantry), died at Madras, 20 Jul 1823, aet 38; John Gwynne, Captain (26^th Regiment of Native Infantry) and paymaster of the Dooab district, died at Brighton, 15 Dec 1832, aet 46 and buried in this church; and Iltid Gwynne, Lt. Col. (43^rd Regiment of Native Infantry) died at Ellore, 31 May 1833, aet 44.
