(216) ROTHERFIELD, St. Denys

Early 13th century with Perpendicular additions - Nairn & Pevsner (591-2); for plan see SNQ (III 51); condition in 1724 reported to be fine (Ford 179); external view dated 1785, shows the church from a great distance, commanding its village with very sparse building immediately round it, see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 139); population in 1801 was 1963; ledgers were relocated in the chancel floor during the 19th century.


216A Mural monument for Humphrey FOWLE, d. 1756

-  Sanctuary, North wall, high.

-  c.128(W); (H) unknown~Faded.

-  Large M.I. in grey marble set portrait-wise; flanked by fluted Doric pilasters; gadroon ornament on base moulding; fluted, scroll corbels; above, entablature; triglyphs and blank metopes in frieze; double ogive pediment; escutcheon in Baroque frame.

-  Humphrey Fowle, Esq., magistrate, etc., d. 5 Jul 1756, aet 73; his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Seyliard, Bart., of Boxley Abbey, Kent; their issue - Elizabeth, Humphrey (both dead) and Eleonora.

216F Mural monument for Nicholas FOWLE, d. 1656

-  South choir wall, near South-East corner; high up.

-  128(W) x c.180(H)~Fine; colour; local losses (escutcheon and lower edge).

-  Set portrait-wise in weathered (?), white freestone; M.I. (engraved, Latin) fills a slate panel; moulded frame with slender black panels; cornice with damaged escutcheon; below, between crudely fluted, scrolled corbels, a panel of trophies in relief.

-  Nicholas Fowle, d. 10 Dec 1656, aet 63; eldest son of Anthony Fowle formerly of Newick; his widow, Elizabeth, patron of 216F; Nicholas Fowle's service to Rape of Hastings.


216G Ledger for John WICKHAM, d. 1591/2

-  Rev. John Wickham, d. 25 Feb 1591/2, aet unknown; son of Edward Wickham of Swalclif, Oxford; his first wife, Mary Hovenden; their issue - Margaret, Richard, William, Margery, Alice, Elizabeth; his second wife, Martha Cornwalle; issue - Sarah, Mary.
