(244) STANMER Parish Church
The church underwent a radical remodelling in 1838 - Nairn & Pevsner (460-1); for a view from the North-East see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 150); Samuel Tufnell (d.1765) who supplied the house with a chimney piece in 1725 cannot have made any of the monuments here, Gunnis (Dict. 401); for other aspects of the manorial context see S. Berry 'Stanmer House and Park, East Sussex ...c.1710-1805' (SAC 143 239ff); c.1760, the village comprised nine houses and one farm; in 1801 the population was 105; Horsfield, visiting just before the remodelling, mentions no monuments at Stanmer.
244A Mural monument for Sir John PELHAM, d. 1580, his wife and his son Oliver, d. 1584/5
- North aisle wall, at head height.
- c.118(W) x c.176(H)~Fine; many repairs.
- At the top, an achievement on a circular plate with a scrollwork base; below this, an entablature on Doric columns, framing three figures kneeling at a prayer-desk (2 male to the left, 1 female to the right); below, M.I. (many lines, engraved, black) on apron below; arms; at the foot, as a corbel, a decorative panel with Latin motto.

- Slab: 100(W) x 199(L); Brass plate: 34(W) x 29(H)~Very good.
- Arms and M.I. (4 lines, engraved) in upper 50% of a circular brass plate set on a black slab; head to West.

244D Mural Monument for Elizabeth SCRASE, d. 1732
- Sanctuary, South wall, at head height.
- c.75(W) x c.190(H)~Very good.
- Arms painted on a lozenge on a white marble mount, resting on a black unframed oval panel; M.I. (engraved); below, a decorated white marble corbel with another (metal) escutcheon on a hard stone ball finial; signed (lower right): 'HARGRAVES LEWES'.
- Elizabeth Scrase, d. 17 Aug 1732, aged 43, daughter of Charles Harison, Esq., and Catherine, of Lewes; widow of William Scrase, buried at Brighton; and brother of Charles Harison, Esq., of Sutton; her son, Henry, d. 23 May 1793, aged 68.
