(47) BUXTED, St. Margaret the Queen
Church now isolated within the confines of the house which was noted by Milles as under construction (by Mr Medley) in 1743 (Farrant 98); originally 13th century; chancel of c.1300, with ceiling c.1600; generally much restored, probably pre-19th century - Nairn & Pevsner (465-6); views of church, etc. by Grimm, Lambert (BL Add. MS 5671 f.100); Turner (SAC 23 144) mentions 'late alterations' impacting on brasses; Gosset was supplying Buxted Park with portrait sculpture in 1779 but not, it seems, monuments for the church (Gunnis Dict. vid. Gosset 176).
