(123) HARTFIELD, St. Mary
North side is late Early English; South side is Decorated - Nairn & Pevsner (517); church plan SNQ (VII 189); repairs needed in 1686 and completed in 1724, see Ford (41 172); there were 300 communicants in 1603, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns); Horsfield (Sussex I 392-3) noted numbers of iron slabs and stone slabs for brasses. An unusually high percentage of signed or attributed works at Hartfield.

- In pale grey marble; a pointed pediment, with escutcheon, over a frieze of garlands on Doric columns on fluted, scrolled corbels; M.I. (many lines, engraved, black); below, another small panel in the same material (52W x 34H) with a raised and chamfered centre; roses in corners.

- M.I. (Latin) ambitious, on a black slate panel with an arched top, set portrait-wise within a white and brown alabaster frame; flanked by polished black Corinthian columns; decorated relief panels at edges, with scrollwork; above, straight cornice with broken pointed pediment with scrolled decoration; between, a black obelisk on a base; below the base mouldings, 2 cherubs on corbels; another M.I. on a semi-circular panel; at foot a third winged cherub.
