Post-1377, some walls later, no internal structural divisions - Nairn & Pevsner (519) and SNQ (XII 76) with plan; fabric reported as fine in 1686 and in 1724 (Ford), between which dates chancel was decorated under patronage of Archibald Hutcheson and for the altar painting done by Roger Mortimer; ceiling with heavenly virtues, etc., see Horsfield (Sussex I 454-5); dramatic social change must have affected the parish as the population grew: 600 communicants in 1603, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns), growing to c.300 families in 1724, to a town population in 1801 of 3,155 and in 1841 of 12,000; Horsfield (Sussex I 454-5) mentions none of the many tablets in the North-West corner; the earlier monuments tend to mark town dignitaries, the later ones, fashionable visitors.
