(160) LEWES, St. Michael
Mediaeval West wall and 14th-century South arcade - Nairn & Pevsner (553); plan in SNQ (IX 151); wooden North arcade of 1748; South aisle designed and rebuilt by Joseph Daw in 1748, see S. Berry (SAC 142 107-9), who notes that Horsfield (Sussex I 210) gives the date as 1755; nave windows on South side were Gothicised in 1885, allowing for mural monuments between them; ledgers presumably lost through restorations of church flooring [late 1820s?]; building reported to be in decent order in 1724, see Ford (147); the parish had a population of 786 in 1801, rising from c.100 families in 1724.

- White on black; M.I. (11 lines, engraved, black) on panel with curved apron; cornice below an urn in bas relief; high pedestal; volute decoration at top; wreathed initials 'MD' in centre; all against a black marble baseplate in obelisk form.
- Margaret Dickens, d. London, 22 Mar 1793, aet 62; daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Lardner, of Lewes; and widow of Rev. Samuel Dickens, D.D., archdeacon and prebendary of Durham.

- Alabaster and column marbles; male effigy (to right) in armour and wife (as widow) kneeling on cushions (hers tasselled); at draped prayer desk; 2 bound volumes; flanking, polished black columns (touch?); above, an entablature supporting a ceiling with drops and rosettes; helm on wall above; behind, M.I. (15 lines, engraved, black) on framed panel; decorative relief work with cherubim and trophies; below, kneeling children, four females on left, six males on right, the two eldest armoured; between, an hourglass; below, decorative base mouldings and baseplate with scrollwork and corbels, one in ball-finial form.

- M.I. on a white panel, set portrait-wise; simple black frame; flanking, Doric half-columns; below, base moulding and 2 block corbels with concentric decorations and palmette finials; above, a frieze with 2 rosettes; a heavy entablature breaking forward left and right, supporting a white urn in low-relief on a pedestal, against a curved apron.

- Captain Charles Rand, served the East India Co. for 17 years, d. 13 Oct 1812, aet 57; also his nephew, also Captain Charles Rand, Junior, served the East India Co. for 14 years, d. 21 Aug 1808 aet 31, son of Cater Rand, of Lewes; both subjects campaigned against Tippoo Sultan.
