(164) LINDFIELD, All Saints

Decorated, much restored; North and South Chancel chapels are Late Perpendicular - Nairn & Pevsner (561); nearly all areas of the church that house monuments date from 13th-16th centuries; an external view from the North in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 102); for groundplan see SNQ (V 217); there were c.164 families in the parish in 1717, which had a population of 1077 in 1801; in 1845, the fine building was reported to be sadly dilapidated, Gomme (285) and extensive interior alterations commenced, Miss Slater, ‘Ancient Mural Painting lately discovered in Lindfield Church' (SAC 2 129); transcribed M.I.s have been checked and sometimes corrected by reference to Bax (SAC 37 151-172); for Board of Pax Hill pedigrees see M.A. Lower, ‘Memoranda relating to the family of Boord …' (SAC 6 197-214) and J. Cooper (SAC 42 245).


164A Mural monument for Mary BRETT, d. 1750 and Mary BRIDGEN, d. 1764

-  North aisle, facing West, high up.

-  Inaccessible~Very good.

-  A white marble tablet set portrait-wise; M.I. (12 lines, engraved, black) in upper 50%; narrow black border; Doric pilasters flanking, set forward; above, cornice then broken pointed pediment with globular urn in centre; below, a base moulding, 2 black scrolled brackets and a blank curved apron.

-  Mary Brett, widow, of Lindfield, d. 1 May 1750, aet 69; also, Mary Bridgen, d. 26 Jul 1764, aet 59, widow of Rev. William Bridgen, A.M., rector of Folkington and West Dean.


164B Mural monument for John COVERT, d. 1794

-  North-East chapel, North wall, above head height.

-  45(W) x 122(H)~Very good.

-  Backplate in pink-orange marble in form of an obelisk with a pointed top; supporting an unframed white marble oval tablet with M.I. (7 lines, engraved, black); below, base moulding, curved apron and white ball finial.

-  John Covert, Esq., late of Chichester, died Lindfield, 26 Oct 1794, aet 78.


164C Ledger for Elizabeth BOARD, 1674/5

-  South-East chapel floor, North side.

-  45(W) x 79(L)~Good.

-  M.I. (6 lines, engraved) in upper 50% of a black slab; head to West.

-  Elizabeth Board, buried 10 Feb 1674/5; daughter of John Board, Gent.


164D Mural monument for Sarah and Richard BOARD, d. 1765 and d. 1782

-  South-East (Masset's) chapel, East wall, above head height.

-  75(W); at least 200(H)~Very good; heraldic colour.

-  A square white marble tablet, with a narrow border, filled with M.I. (engraved and black), on a dark grey pedestal; full cornice over; below, base moulding and curved white apron with an escutcheon; above, against a black baseplate with pointed top, an urn, draped and decorated, on a small base.

-  Sarah Board, d. 6 Oct 1765, aet 26; daughter of Francis and Ann Dalby; and wife of Richard Board, d. 25 Dec 1782, aet 50, son of John Board, Esq., of Pax Hill, Sussex, and Bridget; issue of Richard and Sarah Board - another John, Lieut. (Horse Guards), d. Bruges, Flanders, 21 Sep 1793, aet 29; another Richard.

164F Ledger for Thomas NEWTON, d. 1688

-  South-East (Masset's) Chapel floor, south of pier.

-  42(W) x 60(L)~Sound; cracks; cut (East end).

-  M.I. (7 lines, engraved + 2 lines, scratched) fills a black slab; head to West.

-  Thomas Newton, d. 8 Jun 1688, aet 2; son of George Newton; also Mary Newton (left incomplete).


164G Mural monument for William and Harriot BOARD, d. 1790 and d. 1809, and their children

-  South aisle wall, towards East end, at head height.

-  114(W) x c.200(H)~Good.

-  Black baseplate with a curved top and a pointed bottom; M.I. (engraved & black) fills white marble tablet, set portrait-wise; below, a base moulding, a finned downward-pointing apron and 2 acanthus corbels; black pilasters with hanging garlands flanking; above, a white cornice and a segmented pediment with foliage and an escutcheon flanked by decorated palmettes; trace of signature (underside of baseplate, now partly obscured by wall plaster): 'MARSHALL (?) FECIT / DEPTFORD'.

164I Mural monument for Thomas Gibbs CRAWFURD, d. 1830

-  South aisle wall, just East of crossing, above head height.

-  100(W) x c.80(H)~Fine; rust patches.

-  Black baseplate with pointed top; a white marble sarcophagus on 2 block corbels; a cornice; flattened, pointed pediment with palmettes flanking and low relief of dove within a wreath; signed (lower centre): 'MARTIN / LEWES'.

-  Thomas Gibbs Crawfurd, Esq., of Pax Hill Park, 11 Oct 1769 - 19 Jul 1830.


164J Wall-mounted brasses for Stephen and Parnell BOARD, both d. 1567

-  On South-East crossing pier, facing East, at head height and above.

-  Slab is 72(W) x 187(H)~Fragmented brasses; signs of repair and infill on slab and brasses.

-  An oolitic slab now wall-mounted; supports 4 brasses and also indents from others, now lost; below, a rectangular panel, set landscape-wise (restorations to the right), with M.I. (5 lines, engraved); at the top, a skull, flanked by 2 small M.I. panels (fragment only on right).

-  Stephen Board, d. 22 Aug 1567; Parnell Board, d. [28] Jun in the same year.

-  Crossing floor, South side, West of 164L, partly obscured by piano.

-  56(W) x 61(L)~Badly scaled.

-  An octagonal wooden panel; on each side, a painted achievement-of-arms with M.I. round each perimeter.
