(164) LINDFIELD, All Saints
Decorated, much restored; North and South Chancel chapels are Late Perpendicular - Nairn & Pevsner (561); nearly all areas of the church that house monuments date from 13th-16th centuries; an external view from the North in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 102); for groundplan see SNQ (V 217); there were c.164 families in the parish in 1717, which had a population of 1077 in 1801; in 1845, the fine building was reported to be sadly dilapidated, Gomme (285) and extensive interior alterations commenced, Miss Slater, ÂAncient Mural Painting lately discovered in Lindfield Church' (SAC 2 129); transcribed M.I.s have been checked and sometimes corrected by reference to Bax (SAC 37 151-172); for Board of Pax Hill pedigrees see M.A. Lower, ÂMemoranda relating to the family of Boord  ' (SAC 6 197-214) and J. Cooper (SAC 42 245).

- A white marble tablet set portrait-wise; M.I. (12 lines, engraved, black) in upper 50%; narrow black border; Doric pilasters flanking, set forward; above, cornice then broken pointed pediment with globular urn in centre; below, a base moulding, 2 black scrolled brackets and a blank curved apron.

- Backplate in pink-orange marble in form of an obelisk with a pointed top; supporting an unframed white marble oval tablet with M.I. (7 lines, engraved, black); below, base moulding, curved apron and white ball finial.

- A square white marble tablet, with a narrow border, filled with M.I. (engraved and black), on a dark grey pedestal; full cornice over; below, base moulding and curved white apron with an escutcheon; above, against a black baseplate with pointed top, an urn, draped and decorated, on a small base.

- Black baseplate with a curved top and a pointed bottom; M.I. (engraved & black) fills white marble tablet, set portrait-wise; below, a base moulding, a finned downward-pointing apron and 2 acanthus corbels; black pilasters with hanging garlands flanking; above, a white cornice and a segmented pediment with foliage and an escutcheon flanked by decorated palmettes; trace of signature (underside of baseplate, now partly obscured by wall plaster): 'MARSHALL (?) FECIT / DEPTFORD'.

- Black baseplate with pointed top; a white marble sarcophagus on 2 block corbels; a cornice; flattened, pointed pediment with palmettes flanking and low relief of dove within a wreath; signed (lower centre): 'MARTIN / LEWES'.

- An oolitic slab now wall-mounted; supports 4 brasses and also indents from others, now lost; below, a rectangular panel, set landscape-wise (restorations to the right), with M.I. (5 lines, engraved); at the top, a skull, flanked by 2 small M.I. panels (fragment only on right).
