(195) PATCHAM, All Saints
Norman and 13th century; 'fine' in 1724, the chancel belonging to Dowager Lady Abergavenny (Ford); restored after 1824, in 1856 and in 1883; North aisle of 1898 - Nairn & Pevsner (458-9); 30 families in the parish in 1724; in 1801 the population was 286; no floor monuments have survived.
195A Mural monument for Benjamin TILLSTONE, d. 1829
- North wall of North aisle, West end, above head height.
- 85(W) x 111(H)~Good; black very faded; some local damage to cornice.
- (Now) in a recess; austere in white marble; raised square tablet with M.I. (10 lines, engraved, black) within a light moulded frame; base mouldings; above, a shallow pointed pediment; below, small foliate corbels; signed (on corbels, left and right): 'W. LAMBERT & SON / BRIGHTON'.

- Inaccessible~Very good.
- An unframed rectangular tablet, set landscape-wise with chamfered corners; M.I. (8 lines, engraved, black, elegant Latin).
- Richard Jones, armiger, of Tunbridge Wells, born Montgomeryshire, 8 Jun 1753 and died Brighton, 17 Nov 1821.
195C Mural monument for Richard SHELLEY, d. 1594
- Chancel North wall, at head height.
- 173(W) x 139(H)~Fragments only; worn; local damage; traces of lime wash(?).
- In soft freestone; no effigy; M.I. (3 lines engraved, recut?) on convex frieze with cornice and dentils over; below, an entablature; in the centre, a large achievement-of-arms flanked by two nude mourning or allegorical figures (Labour and Rest?), one (right) holding a spade; baluster columns between; below, a moulded ledge, a blank basement and more mouldings on four ruined corbels, close to the baluster capitals in form.
195D Mural monument for John PAINE ('the Second'), d. 1805
- Chancel South wall, South-East corner, above head height.
- 88(W) x 154(H)~Good.
- A dark grey rectangular frame set portrait-wise; within this, a yellow border, then a rectangular grey marble panel with M.I. (many lines); all resting on 2 small corbels with a decorated apron and an escutcheon (now blank); signed (on baseplate, lower right) 'WILLIAMS / BRIGHTON'.
- John Paine, Esq., d. 8 Oct 1805, aet 56; his wife, Grace, d. 6 Feb 1851, aet 93, late the widow of John Hoper, Esq.; her unnamed son.
195E Mural monument for John PAINE, d. 1768

- A grey marble M.I. tablet set portrait-wise; flanked by recessed darker grey plain pilasters with fluted capitals; below, a base moulding and dentils dropping to an ornamental apron; above, 2 small finials flank a flattened triangular pediment and an urn in relief.

- Nave, South wall, by South door, high up.
- 113(W) x 152(H)~Very good; pigment visible.
- On a simple base, an unframed M.I.; above, a small escutcheon on a circular plaque; final 6 lines added; below, a base moulding.
- Susanna Margaret Roe, died at Brighton, 6 May 1821, aet 76; daughter of Sir William Thomas, Bart., of Yapton Place and Ratton Lodge, Sussex; and wife (45 years) of William Roe, Esq., lawyer, public servant, of Withdean, Patcham, 10 Apr 1748 - 6 Mar 1826; their issue, 2 surviving sons, 1 daughter.
