(222) SALEHURST, St. Mary the Virgin

Early English and Decorated arcades with clerestory of 1861; Decorated North chapel - Nairn & Pevsner (600-1) and SNQ (XV 267) with plan; view from South-East of 1781 in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 143); condition in 1686 reported to be fine, although the chancel of Lady Salcall was 'in a most filthy rude manner' and that of Sir Philip Harcourt was also out of repair (Ford 48); in the later 1550s, the Culpepers ordered burials here, see Rice & Godfrey (4 86) - William Culpeper, of Wigsell, d. 1559, left £10 for a tomb to set on his grave in the chapel at Salehurst where his wife Cicely was buried, see Attree & Booker (SAC 47 62); in the later 18^th century, Hayley noted that ledgers/slabs outside priest's door in 1772, were formerly in Wigsell chapel, in which he saw a slab beneath a tester with indents for brasses; the Harcourts took over Wigsell from the Culpepers in the 17^th century and constructed a vault, which, in 1954, was found to contain five 18^th-century coffins: Richard Harcourt, d. 12 May 1777, aet 67; Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Philip Harcourt, d. 4 Mar 1778, aet 70; Phoebe Harcourt d. 10 Dec 1779, aet 70; two others unidentified; in 1861 the ledger slabs in Wigsell chapel, with all those in the chancel, including 222T, were removed to the tower floor, see J.L. Ward, 'Salehurst Church: the Wigsell Chapel' SNQ (XIV 112ff), citing L.J. Hodson, History of Salehurst 1914 and W.E. Meads, 'History of Salehurst Church' (Sussex Express No. 12, 1936); Horsfield (Sussex I 585) speculates that proximity of nearby Robertsbridge Abbey meant that the church was not a prestigious medieval burial place; the high quality of the relatively inaccessible Peckham cartouches (222D-F) is remarkable; the parish had c.157 families in 1724 and a population of 1611 in 1801; Willatts (SAC 125 102) notes 7 iron slabs here; there are terracottas by Harmer in the churchyard.

- Thomas Jenkin, A.M., vicar of Salehurst, d. 28 Jan 1768, aet 45; his grandparents, Simeon Ashe, vicar of Salehurst, d. 1727, aged 66 and Winifrid, d. 1717, aet 43; also Stephen Jenkin, A.M.F.A.S, vicar of Salehurst and Selmeston, d. 5 Apr 1827, aet 72; his wife, Anne, d. 15 Nov 1828, aged 80; their issue, Elizabeth Jenkin, died Ghent, Flanders, 17 Nov 1792, aet 6, and Lieutenant William Jenkin, R.M., wrecked in HMS Minotaur off the Textel and drowned 22 Dec 1810, aet 19.

Apr 1861, aged 87; their issue - eldest daughter, Catherine Frances, 28 Mar 1803 - 30 Apr 1830; second daughter, Elizabeth Anne, 23 Jul 1805 - 30 Jan 1846, died at Madeira, buried Madeira; elder son, John Odiarne, 23 Nov 1808 - 14 Apr 1880; third daughter, Harriet Jane, 28 May 1812 - 28 Nov 1825, died at Boulogne-sur-Mer, buried Peasmarsh; and Lydia Mary, d. 30 Jun 1883, wife of Thomas Foljambe, of Acomb, Yorkshire.
