(221) RYE, St. Mary
Norman with Perpendicular additions - Nairn & Pevsner (594-6), Butler (SAC 22 124-133), VCH (IX 58); for a view from North-East see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 142); the church paving was reported as in fine state of repair in 1686 and in 1724 (Ford 44, 100); Horsfield (Sussex I 495-6) found the nave aisle in liturgical use but the North chancel with its vaults and M.I.s (but with brasses stripped), was used 'as an engine house, and  for the lumber of the town' and the South chancel (St. Clare) as a parish school; at East end of South aisle, the remains of a chantry used by the Lamb family for burials, restored to church use as a vestry in earlier 19th century, see Butler (SAC 22 124-133); Butler (SAC 13 288) records a Privy Council order dated 29 Mar 1854, discontinuing burials in the church; the parish had c.200 families in 1724 and a population of 2187 in 1801; the church now looks much as it does in photographs accompanying the article on its architectural history in Borrowman, J., 'A short account of Rye Church' (SAC 50 20-40); much of the floor is (still) paved with ledger stones, which are especially dense in the North-East (St. Nicholas) Chapel; there are interesting groups of mural monuments in North aisle and crossing but there is nothing really spectacular amongst what is the largest collection of monuments in East Sussex.
