Mostly post-dates a fire in 1389 - Nairn & Pevsner (565-66); for plan see SNQ (VI 179); nearly all areas with monuments are 13th-15th century; Mayfield had 179 houses in c.1760 and a population of 1849 in 1801; Willatts (SAC 125 102) lists 7 iron slabs at Mayfield (only 3 noted here - 173G, H and P); Gunnis (Dict. 188) notes Jonathan Harmer terracotta monuments (churchyard). - Philadelphia Godfrey, 5 Dec 1750 (St. Austle [sic], Cornwall) - 27 Apr 1807 (Islington, Middlesex); eldest daughter of George Baker, Esq. and Mary; her brother, Michael Baker, Esq., co-heir of the Lower House, Mayfield; Philadelphia was the wife of William Elsley, Esq., of Jamaica; issue - 1 son, unnamed; and then the wife of Henry Godfrey, Esq., of London: issue - 1 son, 3 daughters.

- In white marble on a black baseplate with pointed top; mourning figure in relief; draped urn on a wreathed pedestal; below, a white M.I. on a tablet set landscape-wise, flanked by yellow half-columns with Ionic capitals on scroll corbels with acanthus decoration; above, a cornice; below, a black curved apron from the baseplate with drapes and escutcheon; foliate corbel at foot.

- In grey-veined and white marbles; broken segmented pediments, 1 breaking forward; between, an urn and garlands in relief; flaming lamps flanking; entablature supported on Corinthian 3/4 columns; between, M.I. fills tablet with arched top and (blank) escutcheon with crossed ferns; below, generous base moulding and panelled apron between scrolled and fluted corbels; moulded corbel in centre.
