(173) MAYFIELD, St. Dunstan

Mostly post-dates a fire in 1389 - Nairn & Pevsner (565-66); for plan see SNQ (VI 179); nearly all areas with monuments are 13th-15th century; Mayfield had 179 houses in c.1760 and a population of 1849 in 1801; Willatts (SAC 125 102) lists 7 iron slabs at Mayfield (only 3 noted here - 173G, H and P); Gunnis (Dict. 188) notes Jonathan Harmer terracotta monuments (churchyard). 173A Mural monument for Rev. Peter BAKER, d. 1729/30, and his family

-  Nave, West wall, South of tower arch.

-  127(W) x c.250(H)~Fair; local losses (lower right, arms above).

-  Pendant to 173B; a pointed pediment supporting flaming urns left (lost) and right; fluted corbels; broken cornice; below, M.I. on unframed white marble tablet; flat arched top; full base mouldings on brackets; black backplate; white corbel at foot.

-  Rev. Peter Baker, A.M., vicar of Mayfield 33 years, d. 20 Jan 1729/30, aet 58, son of John Baker, Esq., of the Place; his wife, Marthanna, eldest daughter of Robert Baker, of Middle House; issue - Michael Baker, Esq., of Lower House, born 13 Dec 1716; Michael Baker's wife, Martha, only daughter and sole heir of Walter Roberts, Esq., of Stone House, Warbleton.

-  Pendant to 173A but no losses.

-  John Baker, Esq., of the Place, d. 18 Mar 1723/4, aet 80; his wife, Ruth, daughter of Peter Farnden, Esq., of Selscomb; their issue - John, Michael, Peter, Thomas, George, Nizel, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Lucy, Martha, Charity, and Ruth.


173C Free-standing tomb-chest for Anne RIVERS, d. 1742

-  Nave, North-West corner.

-  Top: 84(W) x 167(L); Base: 87(W) x 172(L) x 79(H)~Fine, rust stains.

-  Freestone chest; moulded white-veined marble ledger with escutcheon then M.I. (9 lines, engraved), head to West; moulded base; Four thick balusters integral with framed blank panels on four sides.

-  Anne Rivers, d. 28 May 1742, aet 47; daughter of Sir George Rivers, Bart. and Dorothea, of Chafford, Penshurst, Kent.


173D Wall monument for Philadelphia GODFREY, d. 1807

-  Nave, North wall, North-West corner, at head height.

-  91(W) x 129(H)~Good.

-  M.I. (engraved, black) fills trapezoidal white marble tablet; grey slate baseplate; below, a thick squared base moulding; above, pointed pediment; blank quartered palmettes flanking; signed (lower right): 'BROWNE / & Co / LONDON'.

-  Philadelphia Godfrey, 5 Dec 1750 (St. Austle [sic], Cornwall) - 27 Apr 1807 (Islington, Middlesex); eldest daughter of George Baker, Esq. and Mary; her brother, Michael Baker, Esq., co-heir of the Lower House, Mayfield; Philadelphia was the wife of William Elsley, Esq., of Jamaica; issue - 1 son, unnamed; and then the wife of Henry Godfrey, Esq., of London: issue - 1 son, 3 daughters.

-  91(W) x 70(H)~Very good.

-  M.I. (8 lines, engraved, black) fills an unframed white tablet set landscape-wise; black baseplate; 2 block corbels.

-  Chancel, North wall, East end.

-  142(W) x 282(H)~Very good; drapery lost (lower right).

-  In white marble on a black baseplate with pointed top; mourning figure in relief; draped urn on a wreathed pedestal; below, a white M.I. on a tablet set landscape-wise, flanked by yellow half-columns with Ionic capitals on scroll corbels with acanthus decoration; above, a cornice; below, a black curved apron from the baseplate with drapes and escutcheon; foliate corbel at foot.

173J Mural monument for Robert and Marthanna BAKER, d. 1714 and d. 1693

-  Chancel, North wall, high.

-  110(W) x 250(H)~Excellent.

-  In grey-veined and white marbles; broken segmented pediments, 1 breaking forward; between, an urn and garlands in relief; flaming lamps flanking; entablature supported on Corinthian 3/4 columns; between, M.I. fills tablet with arched top and (blank) escutcheon with crossed ferns; below, generous base moulding and panelled apron between scrolled and fluted corbels; moulded corbel in centre.

-  Robert Baker, Gent., of Middle House, Mayfield, d. 4 Jul 1714, aet 79; his wife, Marthanna, d. 21 Jan 1693, aet 42, only daughter and heiress of Samuell Cole, Gent., of Braybrook Castle, Northamptonshire; their issue - Samuell (died aet 21), John, Robert, Richard, George, Thomas, Marthanna (still living 1714), Elizabeth, Dorothea (still living 1714), Elizabeth, and Mary (still living 1714).

-  A grey, slate, pointed backplate; a mourning widow in white marble leaning against an urn on a pedestal; below, cornice; M.I. (engraved, black) fills rectangular white tablet; flanked by yellow, 1/4 columns with Doric capitals; 2 corbels with rosette decoration; between, a curved apron with drapes; escutcheon and crossed ferns in grey slate; signed (lower left): 'CH. REGNART / Sculptr Cleaveland Strt'; (lower right): 'Fitzroy Square, / LONDON.'.

-  Michael Baker, Esq., d. 16 Jul 1750, aet 34; only son of Rev. Peter Baker, vicar of Mayfield; his wife, Martha, d. 19 Sep 1796, aet 79, buried Warbleton, daughter and sole heiress of Walter Roberts, Esq., of Stone House, Warbleton, and later wife of Rev. Henry Harcourt, rector of Warbleton and Crowhurst; no issue.

-  M.I. (engraved, white) fills slate (?) tablet; black Composite pilasters flanking; entablature with blank black frieze; above, a generous cornice with scrolled, broken pediment; large achievement in grey stone; below, scrolled corbels support base moulding; between, an edged, curved marble apron with elaborate garland.

-  M.I. (8 lines, engraved, black) fills a white marble rectangular tablet, set landscape-wise; double border; corbels with rose decorated; above, a scrolled pediment with foliate decoration.

-  Jane-Ruth Strode, d. 21 Feb 1819, aet 34; daughter of the late Rev. John Kirby; and wife of Charles Strode, Esq., of Frant; issue Grace-Ruth and William-Thomas.


173R Mural monument for George and Philadelphia BAKER, dated 1765

-  South-East chapel, South wall, near South-East corner, high.

-  130(W) x 260(H)~Very good; fading.

-  M.I. (10 lines, engraved, black) fills white marble tablet, unframed; below, an escutcheon in Baroque frame against brown freestone; moulded triangular corbel; base moulding; above, curved cornice supporting a broken scrolled pediment; plaque with cherub's head; on top, flaming urn; signed (right edge of lower cornice): 'S: Oliver Fecit'.

-  In freestone; Gothic frame with flanking colonettes topped by finials; M.I. (engraved, black) on tablet set portrait-wise; arched top with quatrefoils; base moulding and corbels; escutcheon isolated below; arch topped dark grey baseplate.

173T Mural monument for Thomas AYNSCOMBE, d. 1620, and Katherine his wife, d. 1633

-  160(W) x 310(H)~Fair; colour.

-  In different coloured stones/marbles; surface pigment; 2 kneeling effigies in civil dress, male to left at a prayer desk; skulls in roundels behind both their heads; escutcheon on back wall; round arch supporting a pedestal with achievement; beyond, a broken scrolled pediment with allegorical figures (attributes lost) - Justice and Hope?; arch on plain pilasters with escutcheons; below, in the predella, 5 issue kneeling (2 boys to the left); a base moulding on brackets with mask decorated; below, slate tablet with white M.I. in ornamental frame.

-  Thomas Aynscombe, Esq., lawyer (Inner Temple), d. 2 Dec 1620; his wife, Katherine, d. 20 Apr 1633, daughter of Thomas Eversfield, Gent.; issue: 2 sons and 3 daughters living, 2 died as infants.
