(306) WORTH, St. Nicholas
A major Anglo-Saxon space transformed by Salvin in 1871 - VCH (VII 197); Nairn & Pevsner (641-2); an earlier view from the North-East in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 190); condition reported to be fine in 1724, including the Rowsent (Rowfant) estate chancel possessed by Charles Goodwin (Ford 158); the church was re-roofed after a fire in 1987-88 and many monuments are set on modern cast concrete plinths; the parish had c.120 families in 1724 and a population of 501 in 1801; Gunnis (Dict. 332, 356 & 360) notes monuments here of the 1830s by Peter Rouw II, Charles R. Smith and Thomas Smith to members of the Ewart and Joliffe families.

- M.I. (12 lines, engraved, black) on an unframed plinth; all in light grey marble; large urn with spiral fluted decoration on a foot; above, a cornice; at top, a pointed pediment with snake for eternity; quarter palmettes flanking; below, straight base moulding.

- In alabaster and slate; M.I. (many lines, English and Latin, gilded, not engraved) on tablet with arched top; straight cornice over; above, an achievement; apron, scrolled and strapped ornament; below, a thick base moulding; no corbel.

- A heavy dark grey cornice; scrolled apron; heavy gadrooned base moulding; in centre, moulded corbel; moulded frame in mid grey; whitened lettering on black tablet; no heraldry.

- Susan Goodwin, d. 12 Feb 1657/8; daughter of Richard Wallop, Esq., of Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire, (Richard Wallop was nephew of Sir John Wallop, KG); and wife of Edward Goodwin, Esq., of Horne, Surrey; their issue - Robert, John, Benjamin and Henry, and two daughters Dorothy and Anne. Their son John Goodwin, Esq., d. 18 Feb 1674; and his wife, Katherine, daughter of Sir Richard Deane, Lord Mayor of London, had one son Deane Goodwin, Esq., d. 22 Jan 1660, and two daughters, Johanna and Sarah. The wife of Deane was Thomasin, daughter of Sir Samuel Oldfield; their issue, John (died and buried at Worth); Deane, Esq., d. 13 May 1692, buried at Worth; Charles, Katherine and Sarah (died and buried at Worth).
