(306) WORTH, St. Nicholas

A major Anglo-Saxon space transformed by Salvin in 1871 - VCH (VII 197); Nairn & Pevsner (641-2); an earlier view from the North-East in Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 190); condition reported to be fine in 1724, including the Rowsent (Rowfant) estate chancel possessed by Charles Goodwin (Ford 158); the church was re-roofed after a fire in 1987-88 and many monuments are set on modern cast concrete plinths; the parish had c.120 families in 1724 and a population of 501 in 1801; Gunnis (Dict. 332, 356 & 360) notes monuments here of the 1830s by Peter Rouw II, Charles R. Smith and Thomas Smith to members of the Ewart and Joliffe families.


306A Mural monument for William LAMBE, d. 1823

-  Nave North wall, near West end, at head height.

-  76(W) x 93(H)~Faded; local damage to base moulding.

-  M.I. (12 lines, engraved, black) on an unframed plinth; all in light grey marble; large urn with spiral fluted decoration on a foot; above, a cornice; at top, a pointed pediment with snake for eternity; quarter palmettes flanking; below, straight base moulding.

-  William Lambe, Esq., of Tilgate House, Sussex and East Hardwick, Yorkshire, magistrate, bencher of Gray's Inn, etc., d. 16 May 1823, aet 73, buried Clapham.


306B Cartouche for Roger BYSSHE, d. 1702/3, and others

-  Nave North wall, near West end, above head height.

-  c.81(W) x c.183(H)~Very good; colour part-restored.

-  M.I. (many lines, engraved) on a double convex cartouche; scrolled drapes all round; above, an escutcheon; flanking, death's heads; at foot, 2 putti flanking a lozenge.

-  Roger Bysshe, Esq., of Fenn Place, Worth, d. 21 Mar 1702/3, aet 80; his wife, Ellen, d. 18 Jun 1700, aet 62, daughter of John Parr, Gent., of Kempes, Ireland; their issue - Elizabeth, wife of Francis Wyatt, Esq., of Treemans in Sussex; Hellen, wife of John Shelley, Esq., of Fenn Place; Ellen's niece, Mrs Elizabeth Bradford, d. 18 May 1725, daughter of John Bradford, D.D., and Jane, daughter of John Parr; also Bysshe Shelley, Esq., d. 2 Jan 1733/4, aet 37, son of John Shelley, Esq. and Hellen, no issue.


306C Mural monument for Elizabeth WHITFIELD, d. 1624

-  North transept, West wall, at head height.

-  105(W) x 197(H)~Very good; arms restored.

-  In alabaster and slate; M.I. (many lines, English and Latin, gilded, not engraved) on tablet with arched top; straight cornice over; above, an achievement; apron, scrolled and strapped ornament; below, a thick base moulding; no corbel.

-  Elizabeth Whitfield, d. 23 May 1624, aet 40; eldest child of Sir Edward Colpeper, of Wakehurst; and 13 years wife of John Whitfield, Esq., of Rowfarnt; their issue - Thomas, John, Robert, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary.


306D Mural monument for Thomas WHITFIELD, erected 1631

-  North transept, East wall, above head height.

-  79(W) x 109(H)~Very good; paint restored.

-  A rectangular alabaster frame; above, a scrolled, reversed support for an escutcheon.

-  Thomas Whitfield, Esq.; his wife Mildred, daughter of Henry Manninge, of Greenwich, Esq.; their issue - John who erected 306D in 1631.


306E Mural monument for John SHELLEY, d. 1713

-  Nave North wall, just West of the chancel arch, very high.

-  Inaccessible~Local damage (cornice)

-  A heavy dark grey cornice; scrolled apron; heavy gadrooned base moulding; in centre, moulded corbel; moulded frame in mid grey; whitened lettering on black tablet; no heraldry.

-  John Shelley, of Fenn Place, Worth, Esq., born Wolfs-Hill, West Chiltington, 27 Jan 1666, d. 4 Feb 1739; son of Timothy Shelley, Gent., and Catharine, daughter of Edward Michell of Stammerham, Esq.; his wife, Hellen, 16 Apr 1667 - 10 Feb 1742, daughter of Roger Bysshe, Esq., of Fenn Place; their issue - 9 children.


306F Mural monument for Anne HEATH, d. 1602

-  Nave, North wall, beneath 306E, at head height.

-  80(W) x 120(H)~Much local damage; restored.

-  Freestone frame, strapwork flanking and straight entablature; above, an achievement and flanking part-scrolls; M.I. (shallow-engraving, gilded) on black tablet, set portrait-wise; decorated apron with more part-scrolls.

-  Anne Heath, 16 May 1602 - 6 Sep 1602; daughter of Sir Robert Heath, lawyer, and his wife Margaret.


306G Mural monument for Leonard GALE, d. 1750, and his wife Sarah and family

-  Chancel North wall, East of arch, above head height.

-  Plinth: 83(W) x 120(H)~Very good.

-  Grey marble unframed tablet; arched and moulded top; below, cherub as corbel; above, a draped urn bearing an escutcheon with some books.

-  Leonard Gale, of Crabbet, 12 Nov 1673 - 24 Jun 1750; his wife (since 19 Aug 1703), Sarah, 15 Sep 1680 - 13 Nov 1746; their son, Henry, d. 25 Feb 1749/50, aet 33.


306H Mural monument for the children of Leonard and Sarah GALE, d. 1715 etc.

-  Chancel North wall, towards East end, above head height.

-  70(W) x c.120(H)~Good; cherub cracked.

-  M.I. (16 lines, engraved, Latin) in upper 60% of a simple unframed panel with arched top; below, cherub.

-  Leonard Gale, 6 May 1715 - 4 Aug 1715; Catherine Gale, 22 Feb 1721 - 14 Jan 1722; Richard Gale, 29 Mar 1723 - 7 Apr 1724; 2 others, both died in the womb; all children of Leonard and Sarah Gale.


306I Ledger for Dorothy SMITH, d. 1679

-  Chancel floor, at step, on North side, partly obscured by altar rail.

-  100(W) x 175(visible L)~Edges repaired; cracks (centre); very worn (North side).

-  Achievement, then M.I. (engraved) on a black slab; head to West.

-  Dorothy Smith, d. 9 Jan 1679, aet 25, in childbed; daughter of late Sir Nicholas Weston; granddaughter of Richard, Earl of Portland; and wife of John Smith, Esq., of Crabbet; their issue - Margaret, Dorothy and John, who d. 15 Jan 1679, aet 15 days.

306Q Mural monument for Susan GOODWIN, d. 1657/8

-  South transept, East wall, North side, at head height and above.

-  134(W) x c.220(H)~Very good; heraldic colour.

-  M.I. (engraved) on a tablet set portrait-wise; black base moulding and grey fluted corbel; cherub on entablature; curved pediment with achievement.

-  Susan Goodwin, d. 12 Feb 1657/8; daughter of Richard Wallop, Esq., of Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire, (Richard Wallop was nephew of Sir John Wallop, KG); and wife of Edward Goodwin, Esq., of Horne, Surrey; their issue - Robert, John, Benjamin and Henry, and two daughters Dorothy and Anne. Their son John Goodwin, Esq., d. 18 Feb 1674; and his wife, Katherine, daughter of Sir Richard Deane, Lord Mayor of London, had one son Deane Goodwin, Esq., d. 22 Jan 1660, and two daughters, Johanna and Sarah. The wife of Deane was Thomasin, daughter of Sir Samuel Oldfield; their issue, John (died and buried at Worth); Deane, Esq., d. 13 May 1692, buried at Worth; Charles, Katherine and Sarah (died and buried at Worth).


306R Mural monument for Catharine BETHUNE, d. 1808

-  South transept, East wall, South side, at head height.

-  109(W) x 203(H)~Local losses (below).

-  In white and grey marbles; backplate in obelisk form with weeping woman and urn; M.I. (engraved) in upper 60% of a framed tablet; decorated apron with tiny lozenge bearing arms.

-  Catharine Bethune, d. 31 Dec 1808, aet 62; widow of Rev. George Bethune, LLD, rector of Worth; their issue - unnamed.


306S Mural monument for George BETHUNE, d. 1803

-  South transept, South wall, West of window, at head height.

-  87(W) x 210(H)~Very good.

-  Grey-veined obelisk with relief figure of mourning widow and urn; white cornice over M.I. (engraved) on white tablet with grey-veined border; moulded apron with arms; illegible traces of signature (on under face, partly plastered): 'S... London fecit' [South? Strong?].

-  Rev. George Bethune, LLD, JP, rector of Worth for 22 years and of West Chiltington, d. 16 May 1803, aet 57; his wife, Catharine, daughter of Rev. Andrew Bethune; their issue - 7 children unnamed, of whom 2 deceased.
