(93) EASTBOURNE, St. Mary

Arcades and most of the remainder c.1200, aisle windows a little later, late 14^th-century remains of Easter Sepulchre in chancel - Nairn & Pevsner (483-4); this area was altered to accommodate 93A - Horsfield (Sussex I 296-7); sympathetic restorations took place between 1844-1873, see Leeney (SAC 88 157ff); for a plan see SNQ XV 18; for a view from South-East see G.F. Chambers 'Eastbourne' (SAC 14 127); in 1686 it was reported that paving was required - Ford (51); the chancels belonged at that date to Mr Alcorn [centre?], Sir William Wilson (South-East) and the Gildredges (North-East); by 1724, the repairs [centre?] belonged to Mr Thomas Worge - Ford (167); in Horsfield's day the North-East chapel was for Gildredge and Gilbert and the South-East for Cavendish; the parish was always populous: there were 500 communicants in 1603, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns).

(many lines, engraved, black) filling an unframed white marble panel set landscape-wise; at foot, 2 scrolled corbels.

(53 lines, engraved) on a large composite slate panel, set portrait-wise; flanking, attached Corinthian columns with gilded capitals; on their tall pedestals, escutcheons and masks on the outer returns, with scrolled corbels at foot; main M.I. within a moulded alabaster setting; above, a cherub, then, open broken segmented pediment with 2 angels reclining on upper cornice; achievement on very top with blank black panel below; below the main M.I., another M.I. (11 lines) in part dedicated to the patron 'Nicholas Gildredge'; at the very foot, another cherub, as corbel supporting a bulging black panel with additional M.I. (3 lines, gilded).
